Orman: Colleges need to be more accountable on costs
Source: Topeka Capital-Journal
LAWRENCE Independent Senate candidate Greg Orman unveiled his plan to ease student debt Tuesday, saying colleges that receive public funds must be more accountable when it comes to the cost of education.
The release of the plan comes as Orman battles Republican Sen. Pat Roberts in a close race with less than two weeks left until Election Day. Ormans plan was met with charges of hypocrisy by the Roberts campaign.
The plan calls for schools that receive government aid to hold cost increases to the rate of inflation, requires student loan providers to provide information on how long a loan will take to pay off and the expected interest prior to the loan being issued, and requires the creation of more online tools for understanding the costs of college, changing debt collection practices and protecting soldiers from predatory lending.
Unfortunately, over the past 30 years the cost of higher education has outstripped inflation by a factor of three. Thats despite lots of well-meaning and well-intentioned effort on the part of government to make higher education more affordable, Orman said. And I think if you look at the policies weve had in the past, the thing thats missing is accountability.

(13,340 posts)... Is attributable directly to cuts in state funding. State schools in Indiana are about have another 4% cut to the budget.... In a year the state is running a budget surplus.
There are other contributors.... The top heavy administration with layers of bureaucracy, for example. Oh, and my wife's university just hired a new President, who is paid 50% more than the departing President. But the faculty got a 1% raise last year.
