Syrian forces fire on Turkish refugee camp

Source: The Guardian

Syrian forces have fired across the border into Turkey, hitting a refugee camp in the latest incident to fuel mounting international concern about escalating violence hours before a UN deadline to end the crisis.

There were reports from the AFP news agency that two people had been killed and at least 15 injured inside the camp near the town of Kilis in southwestern Gaziantep province on Monday – the first such incident since Turkey began sheltering thousands of Syrians last summer.

China, meanwhile, called on the Syrian government and opposition to comply with a UN-backed plan for a ceasefire and negotiations as hopes fade that an agreement can be reached by Tuesday morning's deadline.

China called on both sides to abide by ceasefire and troop withdrawal promises, co-operate with Kofi Annan's mediation efforts to alleviate the current tense situation and facilitate humanitarian assistance, and "promote a political solution to the conflict"

3. Only if the Security Council authorizes it which it has shown no sign of doing so far.

One thing Assad should be careful of is pissing off the Russians. If they expect him to at least go through the motions of implementing the ceasefire that he agree to, they could start to think that he is making them look bad. Since Russia is his protection in the SC he does not want them to fell "dissed".

were refugees or FSA members. While Syrian army was shooting on Syrian, bullets injured 4 people in the camp too." This was no unprovoked attack on innocent refugees. Here's a local account she reposted explaining what happened: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=536975

To avoid any misunderstanding, let me explain what has happened today in Kilis at Syria Turkey border around Syrian refugee camp

The Syrian refugee camp in Kilis is right at official border border gate Oncupinar in Kilis

In late nihgt early morning Syrian army attacked on a village near Al izzaz and there were clashes between FSA and Syrian army

Many refugees came to Turkey border very early morning and were trying to cross into Turkey where Kilis camp is

Turkish police and military did not let refugees to cross into Turkey from there because the area is a land mines filed

Syrian refugees in the camp were angry went out of teh camp and were trying to bring new refugees into Turkey

While those refugees were trying to cross into Turkey, Syrian army's snipers were shooting them at the same time

Finally the refugees were able to brought to Turkish side of the border but 21 people were injured in Syrian side

It was not clear if injured were refugees or FSA members. Whlie Syrian army was shooting on Syrian, bullets injured 4 people in the camp too

2 of those 21 injured died and 19 have been taken to hospital. 2 Syrian and 2 Turks have been injured
in camp also taken to hospital.

I can see Turkey establishing a buffer zone along the border, inside Syria. Clashes between the two armies would lead to Iran helping Syria, Nato helping Turkey, China and Russia helping Iran ...

I hope there are no archdukes in the area. Probably not.

Yesterday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan raised the possibility of invoking Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty and calling on NATO to protect Turkey’s border

8. Turkey should playing host to insurgents if it wants a secure border.

It is encouraging the use of Turkey as a launch pad for infiltration of arms and fighters into Syria. No state would idly sit by as this occurs. Turkey will have little cause to complain if Syria gives tit for tat and provides support for PKK and left-wing insurgents operating against the Turkish state.

So they wouldn't really have a leg of consistency to stand on to complain, due to their hosting of the so-called "Free Syrian Army", a salafist terror gang armed and funded by the Wahhabi dictators in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
