Fugitive's flight from police comes to an end
Fort Edward
An alleged serial rapist wanted in eight states was arrested here late Tuesday after he crashed a Jeep into the Hudson River while trying to elude police, pointed a gun at a man who went to his aid and was tracked down by a sheriff's deputy and his dog, Fort Edward police said.
The dramatic capture capped a monthlong manhunt and was set in motion by an alert state trooper on road patrol. The trooper spotted Gregory Lewis, 26, of Southbridge, Mass., who was classified as a "fugitive from justice," driving a stolen vehicle with no front license plate on Route 4 just south of the village shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
Police gave chase, but Lewis eluded them before turning and speeding down Edward Street, which he apparently did not know ends in a dead end at the riverbank.
