Guard troops sent to site of Hawaii lava flow

Source: AP-Excite

By AUDREY McAVOY and JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER

PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — The National Guard is deploying troops to a rural Hawaii town as lava makes a slow crawl toward a major road and threatens to further isolate the community that got its start during the lumber- and sugar-plantation heydey.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira said Thursday the National Guard is deploying 83 troops to Pahoa to help provide security. The troops will help with a roadblock and with other safety issues.

Lava from a vent at Kilauea volcano has been sliding northeast toward the ocean since June. Last month, scientists said it was two weeks away from hitting the main road in Pahoa, a small town of about 950 residents. The lava slowed but has largely remained on course.

People in the small town lying in its path say the lava will reshape the community yard by yard as it slides toward the ocean.

they might end up scattered around the island, and a piece of "local kine" culture would be lost.

The locals (i.e., autochthonous residents) despise the hippies, and do not regard them as part of local culture. The locals want the hippies to "go back to da mainland wea you wen come from&quot . If you really did live there for 9 years, you would know that.

In my experience, such ire tends to be directed toward wealthier haoles who buy up land and drive up the price.

Cuz you've got all the attitudes of someone who just got off the boat. I suppose you think only rich white kids get beaten up in school for being "haoles" and that no middle class white people from the mainland ever get discriminated against in jobs and housing. You are naivete itself. Aloha nui loa!

and you don't get to change your username except every four years after a presidential election. Geographically anomalous usernames are not uncommon for this reason. For instance, DemoTex is actually in NC and NYC_SKP is in CA.

no shirt no shoes rule. Saw old dudes my age wearing only shorts in stores and on the street. I was wondering if they moved from the mainland and if any felt trapped on the island. It costs a lot just to fly to other islands and a whole bunch to fly to the mainland.
They would not let us drive to the lava flow. Roads were blocked off.

many people do feel trapped on the island; the local term for that is "rock fever". Residents of Hawai'i (Big) Island, where Pahoa is, are less prone to it than others, 'cause it's, well, big: nearly the size of Connecticut.

I've got relatives on the big island, but they're in Hilo.

Visited them twice and was amazed by the variety of climates on the island. Rainforest on one side, desert in the middle, temperate on the other. A very unique place.
