Sen. Landrieu's remarks on race anger Republicans
By MELINDA DESLATTE
Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Republicans are calling on Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu to apologize after she suggested that President Obama's deep unpopularity in the South is partly tied to race.
In an interview with NBC News on Thursday, Landrieu was quoted as saying that the South "has not always been the friendliest place for African-Americans."
The comments came after an NBC reporter asked the senator why Obama has such low approval ratings in Louisiana. Landrieu's first response was that the president's energy policies are deeply disliked in the oil and gas-rich state.
She then went on to reference race relations in the South.

(10,096 posts)I would not limit it to the South. I have never seen anything like the vitriol and frankly the open racist comments from people everywhere and on any of your local a.m. radio with their all day long line ups of right wing hacks. It started with the McCain/Idiot campaign with the whole "Who is Barack Obama?", the whole birth certificate thing, and everything else him and his family has had to put up with.

These bastards are in every state. Fortunately, they are a clear (however loud) minority in Connecticut.
With that said, Mary must NOT apologize. She is telling the truth. Obama has his lowest approval ratings in the deep south (and Wyoming/Utah/Idaho).

(498 posts)They don't dislike Obama because of his color, although that does seem to be the talking points here.
CT is full of hunters, they love their guns. They are not too crazy about some of his taxes that went into effect this year, (referring to the 3.5% tax rate on selling a house).
That is really all I have heard while living here
You sound like Sen Landrieu Hail Mary pass

(28,552 posts)... how Obama had anything whatsoever to do with a tax on selling houses? This I'm really curious about.

(19,348 posts)what Dan Malloy's tax increases have to do with Obama?
As for guns, the law passed after the Sandy Hook massacre has 2:1 support in the state.

(7,968 posts)They don't like it when people tell the truth about who they really are and what they really stand for. The problem on our side is not that we sometimes tell the truth about them, it is that we don't tell the truth about them enough so that when someone does they can make a spectical of it and claim they are "offended".

(1,076 posts)What the good Senator said, I'd like to second. For some time now, I've thought some of his disapproval stems from his mixed race background. The excuse used is, "I don't like his policies". Which to me is a veiling of racism in thought. To me, the President, has done more for America, than anyone ahead of him.

(550 posts)Republicans have a lot of trouble with facts. When you hate someone because of the color of their skin, you are a racist. When you would rather have your children die in agony then let a black man help you, you are a racist. And this seems to be the majority of the republican party.

(26,618 posts)It's not just the south either. Plenty of racism to go around right here in Colorado. It's very dangerous and destructive that America can't seem to move on this. I remember, in the sixties, thinking by the time I was old, intermarriage would be widespread and racism would come to a natural end. Civil Rights and Voting Rights had passed, and Dr. King was alive and well. It looked like, finally, at long last.....
Guess it's going to take a little longer.

(401 posts)and this has been the case since the Reconstruction period after the North smashed the Confederacy during the civil war.
And a whole lot of southern whites still hate black people, and haven't the decency or brains or sense to oppose the cynical autocrats who manipulate their stupidity to oppose and degrade them.
This has been going on for well over a century. It's past the point where it's anything other than a psychosis.

(10,252 posts)Just like if you join the Nazi party, you are a Nazi. That's because the Republican party's platforms, policies, and candidates all support policies that descriminate, if not downright punish, people of color. Their policies are also prejudicial to women, the poor, the elderly, immigrants, native Americans, environmentalists, labor unions, scientists, environmentalists, non-Christians, and did I leave any group out? As far as I can tell, the GOP is the party of oligarchs, stupidity, hate-mongers, fear-mongers, and war-mongers, cheaters, liars, and corrupt criminals.

(3,795 posts)This is a large part of the Republican voting demographic that believe that liberals are "evil"/"babykillers"/etc...
These people have been so successfully brainwashed to believe that liberals are evil that they often vote AGAINST the Democratic candidate NO MATTER WHAT. They are highly motivated to not let pure evil win.
And, they are SURE of their moral superiority. They revel in it. It is a huge part of their identity so it would be difficult for them to ever let their brainwashed beliefs go.
I wish we could find a way to break the brainwashing, but I have no idea how to go about that.

(51,076 posts)I've been saying this from day one and nothing has changed. Changed for the worse maybe but not for the better. Many are using first one reason or the other for their hatred of him but in many of those cases the reasons they give is only to give cover for their real reason, his skin, his ancestry.
