Russia Plans Long-Range Bomber Flights Near U.S. Shores
Source: CNN

Russia plans to send long-range bombers to patrol the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, the nation's defense minister said, in what may be Moscow's latest provocative maneuver.
The patrols would bring the flights close to the United States' territorial waters.
Russia has been on a roll with a series of international provocations, ranging from brazen kidnappings to increased aerial operations. In September, the United States intercepted six Russian planes, including fighter jets and tankers, in airspace near Alaska, officials said.

This is a sabre-rattling announcement from Russia, but it hasn't happened yet. At this very moment, the Right Wing-o-verse is already abuzz with the "fact" that Russian planes area ALREADY patrolling our coastlines... And that Obama isn't doing anything about it.

(413 posts)NORAD will know they are coming and intercept them long before they're close enough to inflict any damage, if that's their intent. Those 'Bears' couldn't get within cruise missile range before they'd have F-16s etc on 'em like ticks on a hound. The Air Force and Navy Air probably will look on this as opportunities for good training exercises with The Rodina providing the targets. Besides, the Red Banner Fleet has had missile subs off our coasts for years. They're the real threat if Czar Vlad wants to do the 'crazy'... which I highly doubt... Cuz we have the same thing off theirs. Where do you think our 'Boomers' go when they depart Bremerton and/or Kings Bay?
It's all insane, I know, but there it is... take it from this former career military guy, it's all about posturing, nothing more...

(9,893 posts)It has recently started back up--in fact, it has intensified since the Ukrainian crisis.
One problem is that the Russian plans don't use their transponders, and can be a hazard to civilian air traffic. There was a near miss with an SAS plane leaving Copenhagen within the past few days.
In addition, even in the Cold War, Soviet military planes did not patrol the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean Sea. They confined themselves to the east and west coasts and the Artic.
These are very aggressive actions, and I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of this nonsense.

(17,320 posts)They've got ICBM's that could wipe out any area of the U.S. They don't need bombers. Putin is trying to cook up another cold war.

(15,882 posts)Must be hell to have the enemy flying their bombs overhead, never knowing when your kids might attract attention, a reason to blow their little dark-eyed heads into pieces, believing they MUST be enemies because they are playing in the mud next to the road.
Kinda interesting - our interception technology isn't all that great, so bombers could have a bomb on the way down to us by the time one of our planes shoots.
Might just want to take a moment to hug the family, pet the dog. It might all be over in just a few seconds, or maybe there will be a call, the school and all the kids are gone.
Welcome to the world we have been bringing others for a long, long time.

The minimum count of 178 child deaths is far beyond any acknowledged count of civilian deaths from U.S. drone strikes by the U.S. government. John Brennan, President Obamas top counterterrorism adviser, has called civilian casualties as a result of the CIAs secretive drone policy exceedingly rare.[3] Brennan said in August 2011, Fortunately, for more than a year, due to our discretion and precision, the U.S. government has not found credible evidence of collateral deaths resulting from U.S. counterterrorism operations outside of Afghanistan or Iraq.[4] Though from August 2010 through August 2011, TBIJ documented at least 101 civilians, including 13 children, were killed by drone strikes. Brennan also said from August 2010 through April 2012, the U.S. had no information about a single civilian being killed.[5] TBIJ found that at least 107 civilians, including at least 16 children, were killed by strikes in that time. Finally, in January 2012, President Obama acknowledging the CIAs drone program for the first time said strikes do not cause large amounts of civilian casualties.[6] TBIJ finds that at the time of Obamas statement, at least 284 civilians, and at least 62 children, had died from strikes since he came into office in January 2009. Similar statements downplaying the amount of civilian casualties have been made numerous times by unnamed government sources, according to Living Under Drones.[7]

(26,060 posts)Bringing up something that has absolutely nothing to do with what putin is doing here? And using a juvenile emoticon to show your complete and utter disregard for your fellow Americans. Do you really hate all us that much? Or are you just one of putin's sycophants pretending he's a harmless little puppy in relation to the big bad Americans? I don't know whether I feel sorry for you being so pathetic or disgusted at your attitude regarding the rest of us.
