Obama: 'We cannot be complacent' on Ebola

Source: The Hill

President Obama warned Tuesday that the deadly Ebola virus "is still going to be a danger" to Americans as he pressed lawmakers to approve more than $6 billion in emergency funding to fight the disease.

"We cannot be complacent simply because the news attention on it has waned," the president said Tuesday during a meeting with top health officials.

"We have to stay with it, and that’s why I’m calling Congress to make sure that it approves, before it leaves, the emergency funding request that we’ve put forward to respond to Ebola," he added.

"All this makes it necessary for Congress to act," he continued. "This is not a Democratic issue. This is not a Republican issue. This is a basic issue of the health and safety of the American people, and so I hope that Congress is on the case on this issue before they leave."

Republican aides have indicated that the additional funding will likely be included in a spending bill expected to pass during the lame-duck session, although it's still unclear whether the GOP will agree to the full request. Lawmakers must agree to a government funding deal by Dec. 11 or risk a shutdown.

GOP renews attack on Obama's Ebola response
By Sarah Ferris - 11/18/14 02:51 PM EST

House Republicans are again aiming criticism at President Obama’s response to Ebola, renewing calls for travel bans and quarantines, even as public attention on the disease continues to wane.

Rep. Tim Murphy, who leads the House Oversight Committee’s health subpanel, on Tuesday slammed the administration for repeatedly opposing policies that have been adopted by “respected institutions,” such as the U.S. military.

Murphy was one of several Republicans who also called out Obama-appointed coordinator, Ron Klain, as “missing in action.” Klain has declined to testify at any congressional hearings, since he was appointed last month.

The chairman also said that the Obama administration must stop operating under “false assumptions” from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

He pointed to the government’s assertion that “any hospital could treat an Ebola patient” and that healthcare workers would remain safe while treating an infected patient if they followed CDC guidelines. Health officials have shifted their stance on both issues in the wake of the Ebola infections in Dallas.

It will be months before we can say it was stopped.
That's why Obama wants 50 treatment centers in the US, and that's why nurses went on strike last week.

5. Schumer to Obama: Reimburse NYC for $20M Ebola Treatment

Senator Charles Schumer wants President Obama to pick up New York City’s more than $20 million tab for treating its first Ebola patient.

Since the Big Apple and Bellevue Hospital treated and cured Dr. Craig Spencer of the “infectious disease that is a threat to the nation,” the New York lawmaker believes the government should pony up and reimburse the city.

Around 100 healthcare workers were involved in treating Spencer while he was isolated at Bellevue, Schumer said.

In addition, a 24-hour-a-day operation which employed approximately 500 staffers was established by the city’s Health Department to keep track of the estimated 300 people who arrive each day from Ebola hotspots in West Africa.
