Oakland: Third night of protests sees more vandalism, arrests

OAKLAND -- A third night of protests related to a grand jury's decision in the slaying of a Missouri teenager dissolved into mayhem Wednesday night, with demonstrators again starting fires in the street and smashing windows as they marched through the city's downtown.
A group of more than 100 people gathered around 7 p.m. at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza to being the protest of a Missouri grand jury's decision not to indict police officer Darren Wilson in the August shooting death of Michael Brown. The group grew in size as it marched toward Uptown and into West Oakland, remaining peaceful through neighborhoods before returning to the downtown area.
Some marchers threw rocks at a gas station in as others urged them not to commit vandalism. After that, others began smashing windows with hammers and a baseball bat and spraying graffiti on other buildings as the crowd returned toward the plaza.
One demonstrator with a baseball bat smashed glass doors at the Oakland Tribune offices; police detained him a short time later. Several people were arrested after police declared an unlawful assembly, though specific numbers were not immediately available.
