Michigan mall threatens fines for retailers that didn't start Black Friday hours on Thanksgiving

Source: MLive

If the Regis salon had its choice, the store in the Grand Traverse Mall would not have opened its doors on Thanksgiving.

But the alternative was to pay the mall a fine of around $500, the salon's manager told MLive and The Grand Rapids Press.

"We had to be open all the required hours," said the woman, who declined to give her name.

During those required hours from 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving to 1 a.m. Friday, the salon didn't do much business.

if I am a store owner and I don't like the rules of the mall I'm in, I can walk away and go somewhere else very easily. With the government, if I'm unhappy there, I can vote every 2 to 4 years and hope something better comes along. Or I just have to live with it. People are pretty much helpless when it comes to bad government.

what you eat, breathe, see on tv, what you wear, how much you make, and you don't like it, what are you going to do? True, representative government will listen to what the majority of people want. The United Koch States of America will not. People are not helpless when it comes to bad government.

representative government. They don't give a shit what we want. And it's always based on who can get out the vote, and laws that are in place to stop certain "undesirables" (like minorities, women, the poor) from voting. No change is actually possible. But I can sure decide to go to Pizza Hut if Dominos forgets my pineapple next time. But when Texas decides to impose voter ID laws or severe restrictions on abortions, and if they can get the Supreme Court to agree, we can't do anything about it.

It's about getting off your ass, organizing, protesting, voting, letting your Congress people know what you want. I never said it was easy, but your voice matters. Change IS possible. Walmart may not ever change, but your government will, with the right prodding.

Not opened the doors on time anytime the mall is open is a fine. It can vary from management companies to company. But restrooms, cleanliness, health dept for restaurants etc. comes to mind.

Who's gonna' go to a salon in the middle of the night? I can understand where the mall is coming from as far as wanting to have all stores open for customers, but IMO nobody goes to black Friday midnight sales to have their hair done.

Nobody going to the mall on a holiday is expecting every single store to be open.

Chick-fila locations in malls are closed every Sunday, and I doubt the malls fine them for that.

But honestly, shopping malls are not doing very well right now, and threatening to fine a retailer like that is risky. Any given retailer may decide that it's no longer worth staying at that location, and once storefronts start emptying out, the mall starts going downhill.

The minimum hours you must be open are the published operating hours of the mall - if the center is open from 9 am to 9 pm, then so must be your store. You can be open longer than that - the Southcenter mall in Seattle officially opens at 10 am, but three of its anchors are open earlier. You can never be open less or you'll be in breach of your lease.
