Authorities look at 'antigovernment' motive in Austin shootings

Source: Christian Science Monitor

"Authorities are looking into political, and potentially “antigovernment,” motives behind the shootings early Friday at several government buildings in Austin, Texas.

Minutes before the shooter was killed, witnesses had seen him fire a “fusillade” at police headquarters, after shooting at the Mexican Consulate and the federal courthouse in the downtown area.

Sgt. Adam Johnson, a veteran of Austin’s mounted police patrol, encountered the gunman while he was putting horses back into the stable and quickly fired at the man. But police say they’re not sure whether the attacker was killed by Sergeant Johnson or by a self-inflicted wound."

Austin police identified on Friday Larry Steven McQuilliams, 49, as the slain gunman who opened fire the Mexican consulate and several other government buildings.

Before identifying McQuilliams, police had previously told the press that the shooting suspect had a criminal record and possibly held anti-immigration and anti-government views.

According to McQuilliams' Facebook page, he was an avid participant in Renaissance fair culture, posting several photos of himself in full costume.

They're going to ignore this as much as possible because it doesn't fit the narrative that 'mericuns need to buy more guns to protect themselves from minorities.

He wasn't stopped by talk. He was stopped because he got shot and died.
He could have hurt other people and destroyed a lot of stuff with the bombs he was carrying. Instead there are some broken windows and some plaster that needs to be retouched. No injuries or deaths. It's the best outcome that can happen with an active shooter situation.

to shoot him, no reason to kill him.

He was a bad guy with a gun. He was armed and dangerous. He did not need to have a gun, and if he had not had it, if his application for gun ownership required him to register the fact that he had a gun, maybe the whole situation would not have happened.

even if it were illegal. He would have still done what he did, and he would have been shot doing it. He would have just added gun posession to his list of crimes, which wouldn't matter anyway. People are going to do whatever they want to do, laws be damned.
Tell me, if you will, how you would make gun ownership not only illegal, but impossible. Is it possible to hermetically seal the country to prevent weapons from getting in?

Nothing really political on his facebook. Doesn't come across as unstable.

That is social media for you: convenient, but not necessarily a great tool to investigate crimes

He switched his profile picture to that of a Tarot card - the Hierophant about 2am in the morning - just before he launched into his attack.

The Audiosoave song he posted earlier in the day is a call to arms for someone to "Set it Off".. And before that a picture of a statue depicting a Spartan warrior - my guess with a tie to one of the 300...
