LAPD willing to investigate Bill Cosby sex assault allegations
Source: Los Angeles Times
Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said Thursday that his department is prepared to investigate any accusations brought forth against performer Bill Cosby, even if the alleged incidents occurred beyond the legal deadline for any prosecution.
Beck told reporters that no allegations involving the embattled comedian have been brought to the Los Angeles Police Department.
But he noted that although a potential investigation wouldn't result in criminal charges, it could be used in a civil trial "or a number of other things."
"We don't turn people away because things are out of statute. You come to us, especially with a sexual allegation, we will work with you," the chief said. "We address these things seriously, and it's not just because it's Mr. Cosby."

(14,061 posts)There was a big push for this back when the Catholic Church scandal exploded, but it didn't get anywhere in a lot a of state legislatures.

(2,188 posts)I don't know if it's 5, 7, or 10 years, but there is one. I had a friend who had sex with a 16 year old (they were dating) when he was in his 20's. He wouldn't talk about it until the time for prosecution was up.

(14,061 posts)Sorry.
There should not be a statute of limitations on the crime of rape. It should be right up there, legally, with murder.

The cops have no business doing investigations for potential civil plaintiffs.

(14,449 posts)Big Woopin deal. Civil is not criminal last I heard. So be nice because it is way to nasty out there. It would be nice to have a conversation without snippiness.

(8,509 posts)Cosby might be in the clear regarding statute of limitations, but according to some of the accusers and staff, he didn't do this alone. It didn't happen in a vacuum.
Some of these alleged victims were minors at the time. I would certainly hope the police would care that someone might still be serving up children to wealthy perverts. Or even young women caught in a naive/bad place.

Or is the chief just getting some free PR, since he knows there's like a .001% chance any victims take up that offer?

(12,769 posts)at least in CA. It makes me wonder if the the chief isn't just trying to keep it that way to avoid the police brutality and murders that are the number 1 topics for the majority of us.

(36,286 posts)since such crimes are not consistent with his on-screen or off-screen images, but I don't think he would be the subject of such focus if he was white and/or if there hadn't been a recent series of police shootings.
