KC h.s. student killed in horrible attack outside KC mosque
Source: WDAF-TV Channel 4 Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. A 15-year-old boy died after losing too much blood when his legs were severed in what police believe was an intentional attack outside the Somali Center of Kansas City Thursday evening.
Abdisamad Sheikh Hussein, who goes by the name Adam was getting into a car outside the Somali Center, 1340 Admiral Blvd., when he was hit by a man driving an SUV at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Adam is a student at Staley High School, 2800 NE Shoal Creek Pkwy, in the Northland. He was rushed into surgery at Childrens Mercy Hospital, but did not survive. His family says he was brain-dead and they decided to take him off life support.
It became pretty clear that this was not an accidental crash, there is a considerable amount of evidence that leads us to believe it was intentional, Sergeant Bill Mahoney with KCPD said.
According to some witnesses, the suspect, who is now in jail awaiting charges is a man known to them. They say he is also from Somalia, and that he has a history of hating Muslims.

(3,660 posts)There are certainly a few thousand Christians but that's about it. It's possible he is one of that tiny minority or converted to something other than Muslim here, but that's some pretty low odds.

(3,660 posts)and while I had already mentioned the possibility of a stateside conversion, the odds of a person of Somalian birth hating Muslims are low. Not impossible, but rare enough to warrant a raised eyebrow.

(6,335 posts)From Wikipedia
Christianity is a minority religion in Somalia, with around 1,000 practitioners in a population of over eight million inhabitants.[1][2] Most Christian adherents come from the Bantu minority ethnic group,[3] and belong to the Evangelical and Wesleyan Church of the Nazarene. There is one Catholic diocese for the whole country, the Diocese of Mogadishu.
...........................
Thirty seven years earlier in 1913, during the early part of the colonial era, there were virtually no Christians in the Somali territories. Around 100200 followers existed in the schools and orphanages of the few Catholic missions in the British Somaliland protectorate.[5] There were also no known Catholic missions in Italian Somaliland during the same period.[6]
According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, the Somalia Believers Fellowship, the Somalia Mennonite Mission and the Seventh-day Adventists are present in this country.[7] Somalia is included in the Episcopal Area of the Horn of Africa of the Anglican Diocese of Egypt, though there are no current local congregations.[8] The Adventist Mission indicates that there are no Adventist members in Somalia, and that Christianity in general has seen little growth.[9]
Religious freedom[edit]
Due to the ongoing civil war in the southern part of the country, professing Christians in Somalia have faced persecution and sometimes death. There are no church buildings in the country nor any legal protection for Christians, some of whom would meet in underground churches.[1]
Paramilitary groups in Somalia have also engaged in widespread looting of Christian graves,[10] in addition to the desecration of Sufi Muslim graves and mosques.[11] Sometimes the term "Christian" was a label that the jihadists would affix on people they suspected of working for Ethiopian intelligence.[1] In August 2009, International Christian Concern also reported that four Christians working to help orphans in Somalia were beheaded by Islamist extremists when they refused to convert to Islam.[12]
In December 2013, the Ministry of Justice and Religious Affairs released a directive prohibiting the celebration of Christian festivities in the country.[13]

(3,660 posts)But those people are a small fraction - WAY under 1%, and there are no other minority religions even listed.
I even mentioned a post- Somalia conversion possibility. I am in no way saying it's impossible.
But I just don't see why a person who hates Muslims coming from a country that is 99.8% Muslim is anything other than a bit of a surprise. This is not like an anti-Christian American or an anti-communist Chinese person. This is more like an anti-Arab native Saudi.

(1,009 posts)These two A-rabs were brought over to the US. As part of the agreement to be allowed to live here, they had to assimilate to US culture. One was sent to the West Coast and the other was sent to the Deep South.
After a year, they were brought back to NYC to see who has assimilated the most.
The one that was sent to the West Coast started first.
"I've changed my name from Ahmed to Andy. I've become a big Dodgers and Lakers fan. I started my little business selling falafel in LA, but now, it's grown so big and quickly I'm franchising it all over the Southland. I'm dating this hot blonde Hollywood starlet and going out to night clubs every night."
The one sent to the Deep South replies,
"Hey towel-head, fuck you! I'ma gonna beat the shit out of you anyways."

Hatred of Muslim people has been going on here far, far too long since George W. Bush's bogus war on Iraq and Afghanistan. It has reached out and destroyed even people of other faiths.
"Freedom of religion," eh?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - UPDATE: Friday 11:21 a.m. -
Late Friday morning, the FBI announced it is investigating a hit and run crash that killed a Kansas City teen as a potential hate crime.
Police are saying the driver may have hit the 15-year-old Muslim boy on purpose.
The Muslim community is heartbroken. The Council on American-Islamic Relations says the driver threatened the teen's family and other area Somali Muslims for months, even writing the anti-Islamic message "the Quran is worse than Ebola" on his own Chevrolet SUV.
Zulfiqar Malik of the Heartland Muslim Council says he is shocked and saddened by the crime.
"Most of the Somali community are immigrants, he said. They have arrived in Kansas City to escape hatred and now they are here in Kansas City facing hate and that is bad.
"With hate mongering we say usually it's just words and they can't hurt us but sometimes it gets violent. If we cannot love each other we can at least try not to hate each other."

(2,720 posts)Sadly enough, there are criminals who murder people every day. It's only news when they're obviously guilty and get away with it. This does not appear to be the case here.

Why would you step forward to try to dismiss it here? It's the wrong place for that.

(2,720 posts)Is that what you're saying?
Insofar as your question is concerned, I'm "stepping forward" simply because cherry-picking one criminal act out of thousands creates a significant misimpression about how common such behavior is. If someone started posting a bunch of crimes in which the perpetrator happened to be black, and the victim white, would you think that appropriate? Same idea here.

Same area. Same populations.
The thinking noted in the last article is relevant:
That attack is payback for the actions of their fellow Christian soldiers in Kenya that killed many innocent Muslim at prayers in a mosque in Mombasa over the past week, Rageh said.
Communal thinking at its best. You're not first and foremost an individual. First and foremost you're a member of a larger collective group, of a community, and justice is at the group level. So it's only logical to say that if your group's attacked, any other member of the opposing group can be punished because group members are largely fungible. They're not primarily individuals.
