Biden: Killing of US hostage in Yemen 'despicable'

Source: AP-Excite

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden said Saturday the U.S. will be "relentless" in its efforts to bring the killers of an American photojournalist to justice.

The death of Luke Somers was a "despicable crime," Biden said during his address to a conference on U.S.-Israeli relations.

President Barack Obama said in a written statement earlier Saturday that Somers was killed by al-Qaida-linked terrorists who had been holding him hostage in Yemen during a U.S. military rescue operation.

And generally, I think better of kidnappers that don't kill them. Such distinctions save lives.

A suspected US drone strike in Yemen killed nine alleged al-Qaida militants early on Saturday, a security official said, as authorities continue their search for an American photojournalist held by the extremists.

The drone struck at dawn in Yemen’s southern Shabwa province, hitting a suspected militant hideout, the official said. The official did not elaborate and spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to brief journalists.
