Paul Revere's 1795 time capsule unearthed

Source: CNN

A time capsule buried by patriots Samuel Adams and Paul Revere more than two centuries ago was unearthed Thursday in Boston.

The box-shaped capsule was placed by the Revolutionary-era duo in a cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House in 1795, the year construction began on the building, CNN affiliate WBZ reported.

When current-day workers repairing a water leak found the hidden antique, they called in a local expert from the Museum of Fine Arts who spent the better part of Thursday delicately and painstakingly chipping away at the cornerstone trying to extricate it.

"What we know the box contains, based on the notes that we have, is a Paul Revere plate, papers, and coins from the 1600s," said Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin, who also heads the state's historical commission. "It may contain other stuff too, we don't know that yet," he said.

For a second I thought - is this from the Onion?

Then I went to the story at the link.

Those two WOULD have left us a gift like that.

When we were renovating our house we found 'lost letters' owned by a 15 year old boy in 1957/1958 and a small time capsule from 1909.

So we made copies of the letters, put the stuff back in from 1909, pictures of what the house looked like (kitchen and baths, exterior shots of the house) the day we closed, and after pictures - and a little 'letter' telling our story of how we met, where we had traveled and why we bought the house. Told the future owners we hope they love it as much as we do.

So my point? I LOVE this stuff!

(inside) a corner stone, and not in a big lead box as would have been more typical.

Here is another link -to the Boston Globe article- with photos:

This is the second time capsule found at the building recently. A waterproofed box full of artifacts was found hidden inside the ornamental Lion on the facade of the State House:

Didn't take it all that seriously, though. Thought religion was irrelevant. He followed the Golden Rule closely, and was a New Deal guy.

They should open it up, photograph the crap out of everything, add some artifacts from the current era, re-pack it, seal it up with some modern day outer enclosure that will protect it from moisture, etc., and re-bury it.

What things from the current era should they add? They have to be small to fit in the original box. Coins? A 3-1/2" floppy disk? A handwritten sentiment from the President? A piece of moon rock? A lock of hair from someone really pivotal in current American history?

Suggestions?

Also...any truth to the rumor that his gun had one of those "Bang!" flags like from the silent movies?

Real question though:

After they buried the time capsule, did Sam Adams buy Paul a Sam Adams?
