Taj Mahal gives union deadline to strike a deal, save casino

ATLANTIC CITY — A dispute between the owners of the Trump Taj Mahal casino and an employee union escalated on Thursday when the company CEO gave workers a Monday deadline to abandon their appeal of a bankruptcy court-ordered cost-reduction package, according to a published report.

Members of the Unite-HERE Local 54 union told the Press of Atlantic City they are fearful that the impasse could lead to the closure of the casino and the loss of 3,000 jobs.

The Taj Mahal will be shuttered next Saturday if workers and management can’t reach an agreement that would allow investor Carl Icahn to take over the company and keep the casino operating. The state legislature is reviewing a relief plan involving tax assistance and financial aid to help the struggling resort town, where four casinos have closed over the past year.

Trump Entertainment Resorts CEO Bob Griffin said the union backed out of compromise deal that would have guaranteed health coverage for two years and restored some pensions, according to the report.
