Weekly Address: Giving Thanks for Our Troops
Source: White House
In this week's address, the President thanked the men and women in uniform who serve and sacrifice to protect the freedom, prosperity, and security that we all enjoy as Americans. On Monday the President will visit troops at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey and voice his appreciation in person for their incredible service.
These troops, as well as the many who are still overseas, have met every mission they have been tasked with, from bringing a responsible end to our war in Afghanistan, to working to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL, to saving lives by fighting to contain the spread of Ebola. During this holiday season, a time of blessings and gratitude, the President reminded everyone to find a way to thank and serve the members of the military who serve us every day.

As we go about our days, as we gather with loved ones and friends, its important to remember: our way of lifethe freedom, prosperity and security that we enjoy as Americansis not a gift that is simply handed to us. It has to be earnedby every generation. And no one sacrifices more to preserve our blessings than our extraordinary men and women in uniform.
Thats why, on Monday, Ill be visiting our troops at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jerseyto salute them for their service and thank them for their sacrifices. Since our nation was attacked on 9/11, these men and women, like so many others in uniform, have met every mission weve asked of them. They deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. In more than a decade of war, this 9/11 Generation has worked with the Afghan people to help them reclaim their communities and prevent terrorist attacks against our own country.
Now, many of our troops are returning from Afghanistan, and on Monday, Ill be proud to help welcome them home. Thats because, this month, our combat mission in Afghanistan will be over. Our war in Afghanistan is coming to a responsible end.
Of course, the end of our combat mission in Afghanistan doesnt mean the end of challenges to our security.Well continue to work with Afghans to make sure their country is stable and secure and is never again used to launch attacks against America. The troops Ill visit on Monday have been part of our mission to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL in Iraq and Syria. Theyve been supporting our efforts in West Africa to fight the Ebola epidemic and save lives. Because in times of crisis and challenge, the world turns to America for leadership. And when the world calls on America, we call on the brave men and women of our armed forces to do what no one else can.
So this holiday season, as we give thanks for the blessings in our own lives, lets also give thanks to our men and women in uniform who make those blessings possible. Even as some are coming home for the holidays, many more will be far from their families, who sacrifice along with them.

(128,748 posts)When I heard the address this morning, first thing I thought - "Oh he's headed to Jersey. A quick trip".
That "joint" set of bases are Air Force (Maguire), Army (Ft. Dix), and Navy (Lakehurst). It would be nice if one day, Congress would direct some $$ to fix that radar dish at Ft. Dix (the Mt. Holly - Philadelphia NWS office utilizes that for weather monitoring over our area - SE PA/ S. NJ / N. DE) and the thing breaks down way too much.

(2,941 posts)The US is forcing people to choose between the military, law enforcement, etc and Poverty.
If we want to thank our troops, fight for real jobs with wages and benefits which let us exercise our rights to freedom under the nation's constitution.
The real fight for the safety of the US begins here at home stopping Democrats and Republicans in Washington from selling the US to Wall Street, India and China while shredding the constitution to prevent us from protesting just how fucked up this nation has become.

(15 posts)Change the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of Perpetual War and then we can begin to have a serious conversation about all the "contributions" that our military has made to our security and to peace in the world. Oh, he's got the jingoist, wrap yourself in the flag rhetoric correct enough; but for the life of me, I can't fathom the means by which Obama has become such an enemy of core American values--it's been a staggering transformation to behold, and I grieve for all of us.

(11,238 posts)One of those words is not like the other. When did the White House start adding 'prosperity' to the list of things soldiers enlist to fight & die for?

(42,685 posts)Prosperity isn't a dirty word.
Here is what Jimmy Carter said in his 1980 State of the Union Address:
We are prepared to work with other countries in the region to share a cooperative security framework that respects differing values and political beliefs, yet which enhances the independence, security, and prosperity of all.
Or LBJ, in discussing the need for increased expenditures in support of the war in vietnam:
These projected increases in expenditures for our national security will bring into sharper focus the Nation's need for immediate action: action to protect the prosperity of the American people and to protect the strength and the stability of our American dollar.

(297,120 posts)we'd like all Americans to have these comforts.
When people get out and vote Dem and not sit hope during midterms.. we'd have more of a chance. The President certainly had a lot of bills to make that happen that got voted down by the teabaggers(who do the fuck get out and vote).
Thanks cal.
