Life for a Tourist in Venezuela

“YOU will be robbed, there’s no avoiding that. Just don’t fight it or they will kill you.”

This was the advice that Will Hatton, a 26-year-old traveller who explores some of the world’s least-visited countries on an extreme budget, received when he announced he was going to explore Venezuela.

He tells news.com.au what it’s really like in a country with more oil than anywhere else in the world — and the second-highest murder rate. As he quickly discovered, it’s also a place that can make the average traveller feel rich.

The streets of Merida were alive with activity, an aura of menace hung heavily in the air. A blockade glinted in the afternoon sun, and black smoke from burning tyres spiralled into the sky.

For now, my wife would probably divorce me if I took the risk of going there!

Travel like that is my passion though.

But a lot can happen in 7 months...Watching the situation there closely. Being they are oil rich with a big target on their back and they are unstable, it's probably only going to get worse for VZ before it gets better.

Visa requirements have gotten increasingly stringent and though most of the unrest is in the populated areas, I'm worried that eventually (as the economic situation deteriorates further) people will bleed into the tourist areas to target where there is more money. It is already happening at the borders with the police. They know that tourists are carrying tons of cash, so stop, frisk and take has become more prevalent.

Could be wrong though, the writer points out what I've had over and over.... The main tourist areas are well away from the more populous, unstable areas and enjoying the good economy so things are relatively normal and the tourist is pretty well sheltered. It's just getting to and from these areas where it gets dicey. Just bring plenty of Toilet paper for yourself.
