Syria crisis: Homs army assault enters fourth day (BBC)

Assad seems determined to take down as many as he can before the inevitable. A real tragedy for Syria, its people of course, and the region. Russia and China deserve international condemnation for their role in the UN veto. ~ pinto

An assault by the Syrian army on the restive city of Homs has entered its fourth day.

Hundreds of people are reported to have been killed since government troops began pounding known strongholds of opposition groups.

The BBC's Paul Wood, in Homs, says residents fear troops are about to launch a ground assault.

It comes as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is due to arrive in Damascus for talks with Syrian leaders.

Russia, along with China, has faced international condemnation after vetoing a UN resolution that backed an Arab League peace plan for Syria.
