Texan Pride: Medical Staff Turns Gynecology Patient Into Immigration After Detaining Her for Hours
September 14, 2015
After being held for several hours at a Texas healthcare clinic during her annual gynecological exam, Blanca Borrego was arrested in her examination room. Medical staff delayed Blanca and notified authorities that she was at the clinic.
Borregos oldest daughter said she watched police take her mother from the clinic. They said to her, Were going to take her downtown, she presented a form of false identification, and added, Shes going to get deported.
They took her into the examination room solely for the purpose of being arrested, said Clarissa Guajardo, Borregos attorney. I just have a very hard time with that. I think its a violation of HIPAA laws.
Borrego was appearing at Northeast Womens Healthcare clinic for the first time to be seen by a doctor she had a previously seen elsewhere.

(66,310 posts)Immigration would have to go over, under, or through me to get to one of my patients. I would never betray the trust of another human being that way.
I'm so glad I don't live in Texas anymore.

(30,730 posts)who felt exactly as you do. They knew they had patients who were illegal. They treated them, and regarded their immigration status as none of their business. And this was before HIPAA.

(949 posts)That's a $100,000 fine or so. And then this:
'A spokeswoman for the clinics parent company, Memorial Hermann, named Alex Loessin answered, As you know, because of patient privacy, I am unable to provide comment.'
Bloody hypocrites.

(11,904 posts)"Guajardo still has questions about the legitimacy of Borrego's arrest at the women's healthcare clinic last week. 'It's a basic human right to be able to get medical care,' she said."
No, it actually isn't a basic human right to get health care in the U.S.
And take a look at this article regarding Memorial Hermann going after patients to get payments:
