For the Archdiocese of New York, planning for a visit from the pope is a lot like staging a Super Bowl. And that is where Alfred F. Kelly Jr. comes in.

Fresh off his performance as the maestro of last year’s Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Mr. Kelly is the chief layman overseeing the coming visit by Pope Francis. He has spent several months arranging the details of the pope’s day-and-a-half tour and is prepared for tens of thousands of people to be thrilled and many others to be disappointed.

After all, hordes of Catholics in the metropolitan area would crawl on their knees to attend the papal Mass at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 25, but Mr. Kelly had only about 20,000 tickets to dispense.
