SBHS — forge new ‘Rebel’ identity (VT)

South Burlington should embrace the controversy over the high school’s “Rebel” nickname as an opportunity to forge an identity for the school that leaves no doubt about what the word means to the community.

There is no inherent negative meaning to the word rebel. After all, this nation was founded on rebellion ...

... Yet the entire school community must recognize the inescapable historical link between the nickname and the Confederacy. The worst thing the school can do is to listen to those who say the Rebel controversy is a “non-issue” and belittle any attempt to have an honest discussion about the historical baggage the word carries ...

A decision to keep the Rebel nickname would be an opportunity for the high school to make clear the word has no association with the Confederacy ...
