A Kalgoorlie-Boulder photographer detained by US immigration officials for more than 30 hours says the experience has opened her eyes to the struggles people face around the globe.

Georgia Foulkes-Taylor spent the latter half of 2014 travelling through Central America and was looking forward to returning to California to spend Christmas with her partner, when she was taken into custody by the US Department of Homeland Security on December 23.

While she was released after just over a day in custody, after intervention from the Australian consular officials, she said the experience had left her shaken.

"It was five minutes for me, a bit over a day, but it was one of the worst experiences of my entire life," Ms Foulkes-Taylor said.
