Is Ukraine erasing history by tearing down Lenin statues?

On Thursday, a 66-foot statue of Vladimir Lenin was pulled off a pedestal in Zaporizhzhya, a city in southeastern Ukraine. About 1,000 statues to the Soviet leader have reportedly been toppled since 2013, but the one removed Thursday was believed to be the biggest one that remained and the most difficult one to take down.

"It would be easy to demolish it: place an explosive, blow it up and everything, but to take it down carefully and transport it to a storage place for totalitarian statues needs more care," a spokeswoman for the local mayor's office told Reuters. "The papers on how it was built are all in Moscow, so it's being taken down with a method of trial and error," she said ...

There are four monuments celebrating Confederate causes in New Orleans slated for removal, and some folks have been wondering where they will end up after they are removed. Ukraine has apparently designated spaces for "totalitarian statues." Maybe they can make accommodations for Confederate statues, too ...

... What atrocities do public figures have to commit, to what noxious policies do they have to ascribe before there's universal agreement to remove yank their statues from pedestals?
