If Chaffetz won't do his job, replace him - By Jennifer Rubin

February 2 at 11:45 AM

Jennifer Rubin writes the Right Turn blog for The Post, offering reported opinion from a conservative perspective

Politico reports that Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) is not about to explore obvious conflicts of interest and the blatant violation of the Constitution’s emoluments clause in the Trump administration. “Chaffetz’s committee released a proposed agenda this week, listing 43 items for potential investigation. Not listed among them is anything having to do with possible conflicts of interest for President Donald Trump and the massive business empire in which he has retained a stake.”

He does have time, however, to continue his fishing expedition regarding Hillary Clinton. Chaffetz told CNN: “I will deal with the situations with Donald Trump one at a time. I am not going to personally target the president. I didn’t do that with Barack Obama. But as issues come up, we’ll deal with them one at a time.” Sorry, but Obama did not have massive personal conflicts of interest, as Trump does. He did not retain ownership of a far-flung international business, as Trump did. So there was no need to “personally” target Obama. And by the way, Chaffetz did spend the Obama administration digging into every nook and cranny of Clinton’s tenure at the State Department, something he pledges to continue despite a lack of purpose or factual basis.

The Post reports that Democrats wanted to pursue three obvious, pertinent issues:.

First, they suggested the committee probe foreign funds or other benefits received by any businesses owned by the president to protect against violations of the “Emoluments Clause” of the U.S. Constitution, which forbids presidents from obtaining any benefit from foreign government entities without the consent of Congress.
