A mother has described her son’s attempt to burn a £20 note in front of a homeless man as “thoughtless and cruel”.

A video was shared on social media platform Snapchat showing University of Cambridge student Ronald Coyne attempting to light the cash note over the road from a rough sleeper.

Mr Coyne, who is believed to be a distant relative by marriage of Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, has been expelled from the Cambridge University Conservative Association (CUCA).

“I don’t really know why he’s done something so thoughtless and cruel,” said Sandra McLaughlin, speaking to a journalist from her family home in Livingston, West Lothian, in Scotland.
