The scariest thought: What if Donald Trump just doesn't know what he's doing?

Republicans have yet to publicly admit this--out loud and in public.

The scariest thought: What if Donald Trump just doesn't know what he's doing?

Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large

Updated 11:34 AM ET, Wed May 17, 2017

(CNN)The fundamental question, always, when it comes to President Donald Trump is this: Is he following a grand plan that only he can see or is he just saying and doing things with no broader blueprint in mind?

The stunning nature of his election convinced most people -- including me -- that he was playing a sort of three-dimensional chess, executing a strategy that seemed crazy on its face but turned out to be crazy like a fox.

The events of the first 117 days of the Trump White House -- and, especially, the last 7 days -- suggest that assumption might be dead wrong.

This paragraph from a New York Times report today on allegations as to whether Trump revealed classified information to two top Russian officials is stunning:

"In private, three administration officials conceded that they could not publicly articulate their most compelling — and honest — defense of the president for divulging classified intelligence to the Russians: that Mr. Trump, a hasty and indifferent reader of his briefing materials, simply did not possess the interest or the knowledge of the granular details of intelligence gathering to leak specific sources and methods of intelligence gathering that would harm American allies."

He doesn't know what the hell he's doing. He gave intelligence to the Russians for ego vanity reasons. To show how powerful, knowledgeable, great he is.

It confounds me how Trump was attributed with so much cunning during the election - and beyond.

Trump will bring Trump down by his own actions.

He bit off much more than he could ever chew. He is a stupid bully who was handed money.

My guess is that he owes Putin his soul and at some point the who world will see it.

My father was 92 and not classicly senile or demented. He knew where he was, could drive without getting lost, knew the day of the week, etc. But he exercised amazingly bad judgment.

He made a new will every six months which resulted in my siblings and me being disinherited and the neighbor across the street getting a bequest of $35,000. He had a housekeeper but refused to let me straighten up his mess or wash his dishes. He could drive but got into accidents.

Trump reminds me a lot of Dad.

...that this idiot has NO DAMN IDEA at all what the hell he is doing?

"The stunning nature of his election convinced most people -- including me -- that he was playing a sort of three-dimensional chess, executing a strategy that seemed crazy on its face but turned out to be crazy like a fox." No, Mr. Cilliza, it did not convince most people. Most of us knew this early on. Most of us only indulge in willing suspension of disbelief when going to the movies.

And I think, "crazy like a fox" should have been "bat-shit crazy." Crazy like a fox is actually a compliment to someone's ability to be clever. Totally does not apply to Trump.

Everybody gets forced to "wing it" now and then. It's necessary to be able to roll with the punches. But it's not a core strategy. Example: going to give a presentation and the projector dies. It happens. If you're *prepared* and know your material, you can do the presentation without projecting the PowerPoint slides.

This President seems to be winging it all the time!

And isn't that something the Republicans would have had to establish beyond doubt before allowing him anywhere near the reins of government?

After enriching themselves and their corporate masters, the Republicans' prime goal is to try and 'prove' that government doesn't work. Their strategem in accomplishing this is putting utter incompetents in office. Through feel-good 'Morning In America' propaganda, a la Ronald Reagan, or through outright election fraud, as with GWB and Trump.
