Reagan started the practice. Opinion was divided, and the official military verdict was "optional."

Except to note that if you're military and not in uniform you don't salute. Hence the divided opinion.

Some ripped into Bush for saluting while holding a dog. Some into Obama while holding a cell phone to his ear or a latte. Can't defend one without defending the other. I think it's optional, and if no civilian prez saluted for a century, I go with "whatever." I have something more important to do than stress out over this. Closing this browser. window.

14. Good info and agree. But given Rump's authoritarian nature, it'd be worth remark

if he did express a basic equality among men and respect he does not feel toward subordinates by returning salutes. For authoritarians and those conservatives who do not feel the principle of equality in their guts, the requirement runs one direction only, the same as obedience: Up.
