On May 7, 2018, Ivanka Trumps business received registration approval from the Chinese government for five trademark applications. An additional trademark also received first trial approval on May 6. The trademarks, which were applied for in March of 2017, give Ivankas business trademark rights on goods including bath mats, textiles, and baby blankets.
This isnt the first time that Ivankas and President Trumps business connections to China have raised potential ethics issues. The same week Ivankas business received registration approval, President Trump announced that he would work to save jobs at the Chinese telecommunications company ZTE. About 72 hours before his announcement, the Chinese government also agreed to loan $500 million to a project in Indonesia in which the Trump Organization is a partner.
Four of the other trademarks Ivankas business applied for in March 2017 have received first trial approval, and one other received registration approval in March. Ivanka Trump Marks LLC already holds more than a dozen trademarks in the country as well as multiple pending applications. China is also a major supplier of Ivanka Trump-branded merchandise
As a White House adviser, Ivanka has represented the United States at multiple diplomatic events despite the potential conflicts her business interests present. Although Ivanka has stepped down from her role at her business and has placed it in a trust, she continues to receive profits from the business.
