Considered Jair Bolsonaro's intellectual guru, writer Olavo de Carvalho, 71, says that there are no intellectuals on the left at his level and that his critics are nothing more than slanderers. "It's a, let's say, intellectually catastrophic situation," he said, during an interview with Folha.
Author of books "Garden of Afflictions" (1995) and "The Collective Imbecile" (1996), Carvalho lives in Richmond, Virginia, since 2005. And not even a newly elected conservative president will make him go back to living in Brazil. For him, the Brazilian conservative movement is coming in late and shows "horrible lack of experience."
Read excerpts from the interview:
You signaled that you would like to be the Brazilian ambassador in the United States.
I never said that. I said that if I were to be invited for a position [in the Bolsonaro administration], the only role I could accept was that one. And only, of course, if there wasn't any other more qualified candidate. I suggested a name. I'm not going to say who the person is, because it has been officially announced it. They offered me two ministries, Education and Culture. I said no to both.
