New Oxfam Report, Fairer Taxation of Wealthiest Will Help Reduce The $ Gap

Oxfam website: Oxfam is a global organization working to end the injustice of poverty. We help people build better futures for themselves, hold the powerful accountable, and save lives in disasters. Our mission is to tackle the root causes of poverty and create lasting solutions. https://www.oxfamamerica.org/explore/about-oxfam/

- PUBLIC GOOD OR PRIVATE WEALTH? Oxfam Report, 1/20/19

Universal health, education and other public services reduce the gap between rich and poor, and between women and men. Fairer taxation of the wealthiest can help pay for them.

Our economy is broken, with hundreds of millions of people living in extreme poverty while huge rewards go to those at the very top. The number of billionaires has doubled since the financial crisis and their fortunes grow by $2.5bn a day, yet the super-rich and corporations are paying lower rates of tax than they have in decades.

The human costs – children without teachers, clinics without medicines – are huge. Piecemeal private services punish poor people and privilege elites. Women suffer the most, and are left to fill the gaps in public services with many hours of unpaid care.

We need to transform our economies to deliver universal health, education and other public services.

To make this possible, the richest people and corporations should pay their fair share of tax. This will drive a dramatic reduction in the gap between rich and poor and between women and men.

She was the guest speaker for our monthly luncheon for United Methodist Women at my church in Fort Worth.
It was a thought provoking and impressive program.

She lives in DC and flew to Fort Worth on her own dime to speak to us because of the close relationship between UMW and Oxfam.

UMW's National Offices are very near the SCOTUS building, and they have a National Lobbying Day, and State legislative lobbying days in every state. The focus of the day is chosen at the national level and all our conferences meet with representatives/senators on that subject.

This was my first encounter with Oxfam and I was amazed. I highly recommend inviting one of their outreach committee members to speak

scope is large and it's encouraging to know that organizations like Oxfam are trying to find solutions to the world's many problems. Thanks for sharing your positive Oxfam UMW experience here.
