Alaska's Don Young -- loose lips of Congress' longest serving Republican
Alaska's crusty U.S. Rep. Don Young once waved an 18-inch oosik -- a walrus' penis bone -- at U.S. Fish and Wildlife director Mollie Beatty, during an endangered species hearing of the House Natural Resources Committee.
He was reprimanded by then-House Speaker John Boehner for racist remarks toward Mexican immigrants and had to apologize to Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., after saying in a House floor debate that she "doesn't know what she is talking about."
Yet, Don Young is Dean of the House, its longest serving member. On Wednesday he became the longest serving Republican in the history of the body. He eclipsed the 46-year record set by early 20th Century House Speaker Joe Cannon.
Young has not chaired a major House committee in more than a decade. He has been investigated by the House Ethics Committee, particularly over ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Yet, he was lionized Wednesday by Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. When she saw Young wear a tie decorated with pictures of an owl, an eagle and a bear, Pelosi asked if this meant he had softened on protection of endangered species. Young looked at the tie and replied: "Breakfast."
