'A retired Supreme Court justice wants his former colleagues to adhere to precedent and the president to comply with subpoenas.

At 99, John Paul Stevens can remember a time when a Supreme Court nomination prompted minimal controversy, confirmation hearings proceeded without made-for-television speechifying and senators unanimously approved an unblemished nominee.

That was his own experience in 1975, when a Democratic-led Senate voted 98-0 to confirm him: a former corporate lawyer named an appellate judge by President Richard Nixon, then tapped by President Gerald Ford to succeed a liberal firebrand, William O. Douglas.'>>>
