Alabama Governor Signs Abortion Ban Into Law
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed a controversial bill that bans nearly all abortions into law Wednesday evening.
It's considered the most restrictive abortion law in the United States. The law makes it a crime for doctors to perform abortions at any stage of a pregnancy, unless a woman's life is threatened or there is a lethal fetal anomaly.
Under the new law, doctors in the state face felony jail time up to 99 years if convicted. But a woman would not be held criminally liable for having an abortion.
The law does not take effect for several months.
The Alabama Senate passed the bill Tuesday evening. The state House had already overwhelmingly approved the legislation. It's part of a broader anti-abortion strategy to prompt the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider the right to abortion.

Poison Ivey.

(46,038 posts)1. While Ivey won't be nominated for the Profiles in Courage Award for vetoing the bill, politically she would have been punished either way.
2. If Ivey had vetoed the bill, there were enough votes to override her veto. Same result.
3. Ideally, I would have liked her to veto the bill with some memorable words about American (not Alabamians') women's right to reproductive freedom. To be a hero at the expense of political survival.
4. She'll probably be primaried or voted out of office anyway now that she's served her purpose.

(11,885 posts)Getting voted into higher office at a faster pace, and increase the chances trump and the gop will lose both the office of the presidency, and control of the Senate. This is a disaster for trump and the gop doing this, and will backfire on them badly. They just thought the Mid Terms was bad for them. 2020 will be here soon, and Congressional republicans have to be very , very upset all these issues aren't backed by the majority of the American people, which WILL hurt them getting elected again, and it will.
