Republican Senate Harakiri - WSJ Editorial
(snip)
In 2018 Kansas voters made the mistake of nominating Mr. Kobach for Governor. Mr. Kobach then managed the considerable feat of losing to Democrat Laura Kelly by four percentage points. He didnt raise enough money and his single-issue focus on immigration turned off swing voters. It takes work for a Republican to lose in Kansas, but Mr. Kobach also lost a run for Congress in 2004, the year George W. Bush was re-elected.
Mr. Kobach is still obsessed with immigration. Our borders are being overrun, he said Monday in announcing his candidacy. He added that President Trump needs someone who will lead the charge for him in the United States Senate.
Republicans have a chance to pick up a seat in Alabama if they defeat incumbent Democrat Doug Jones. But that assumes GOP voters dont again nominate Roy Moore, the former judge who lost to Mr. Jones in a special election in 2017. Mr. Moore recently said hes running for the Senate again, and Mr. Jones might still beat Mr. Moore again if Mr. Jones died mid-campaign. Messrs. Kobach and Moore will both have primary competitors who would be general-election favorites, so GOP voters will have a chance not to commit Senate harakiri.
Republicans have an especially bad history of giving away what should be winnable Senate seats. Recall the nominations of the self-immolating Christine ODonnell in Delaware in 2010 and Todd Akin in Missouri in 2012. And dont forget Corey Stewart in Virginia in 2018, who ran on separating migrant families at the border. Dont underestimate Corey, a major chance of winning! Mr. Trump tweeted at the time. Mr. Stewart lost by 15.7 points.
