Jeffrey Epstein Taught at Dalton. His Behavior Was Noticed.
Some students at the esteemed Manhattan prep school recall that Mr. Epstein, now charged with sex trafficking, was willing to violate norms in his encounters with girls.

In the mid-1970s, students at one of New Yorks most esteemed prep schools were surprised to encounter a new teacher who pushed the limits on the schools strict dress code, wandering the halls in a fur coat, gold chains and an open shirt that exposed his chest.
The teacher, Jeffrey Epstein, would decades later face allegations that he coerced and trafficked teenagers for sex. At the Dalton School on the Upper East Side, some students saw Mr. Epstein as an unusual and unsettling figure, willing to violate the norms in his encounters with girls.
Eight former students who attended the prestigious school during Mr. Epsteins short tenure there said that his conduct with teenage girls had left an impression that had lingered for decades. One former student recalled him showing up at a party where students were drinking, while most remembered his persistent attention on the girls in hallways and classrooms.
I can remember thinking at the time, This is wrong, said Scott Spizer, who graduated from Dalton in 1976.
None of the female students who spoke to The New York Times in recent days remembered Mr. Epstein making unwanted physical contact with them, and he has not been accused of any crimes related to his time at the school.

(35,454 posts)able to teach at a wealthy, private school? Why did Barr hire him when clearly he was inappropriate?

(33,643 posts)Not that it makes it 'normal', but pretty sure he at least 'went to college'.
Apparently the dude was pretty freakishly smart with math ... guessing that's why he was given the job.

(35,454 posts)But read here on DU he never took a class at Harvard. He did take a few classes at NYU and Cooper Union but to my mind that hardly qualifies him to teach. What I want to know is where he got his money, he's spent an unbelievable amount over the years but I have yet to read about a really credible source.
Epstein savored his university ties. He was photographed wearing a crimson sweatshirt, Harvard emblazoned in white letters across his chest. As recently as 2014, Epsteins foundation issued press releases referring to him as a Harvard mogul, and renowned science and Harvard investor.
But Epstein was not, exactly, a Harvard mogul. He was not a Harvard alum, a Harvard professor, or a Harvard parent.
Epstein, who took some classes at Cooper Union and New York University, does not have a college degree, according to a 2002 profile of him in New York magazine. In any case, his major institutional contributions to Harvard may have been largely talk.

Epstein who has pleaded not guilty didn't attend Harvard, or graduate from college. But even as he allegedly cultivated a network of underage girls for sex, he amassed a group of friends at the university and supported research there.

(35,454 posts)It's the credentials aspect I'm wondering about. I wonder what the parents who pay the very hefty fees for Dalton feel about that if they even knew. And why, when surely there were others equally able and more qualified did Barr hire him? Also, did he know him in the first place? After all Epstein didn't come from money or influence and they likely didn't travel in the same social circles.
