Why is my president a racist?

By Tom Burke

In my last column I asked why people believe Trump’s lies.

I posited it was either they’re stupid or profit from his falsehoods.

This week, I’m asking why people tolerate, support, or even vigorously encourage his divisive behavior, racist words, and white supremacist support.

Is it, again, stupidity? Or that they somehow profit from tax cuts and fewer federal regulations? Or do they fear of being “replaced” in the culture by non-whites? Or that they’ve been left behind and lose jobs? Or do they believe the “white” race is somehow superior to any other?

I’m not going to spend a lot of time reciting all Trump’s impossible-to-excuse racist comments. But here are some undoubted ones where he:
• Called Mexicans rapists and murderers.

• Claimed an “invasion” by brown hoards from the south (which was quoted in the El Paso killer’s manifesto to justify his murders).

• Tried to ban Muslims from the US because they are Muslim.

• Made false attacks on four Congresswomen, saying they “hate our Country.” And then beamed for thirteen seconds as a crowd chanted “Send her back.”
