Does America's economic revival mean making Americans expendable?

Even when accustomed to the conspiracies and falsehoods of Fox News, the scene on Monday night with Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick as guest on the Tucker Carlson show defied belief. It was pure social Darwinism, survival of the fittest, and journey back to 1930s German eugenics.

The "lite governor" had a cure for America's coronavirus-caused lockdown. End it. "So, my message is that let's get back to work," Patrick said. Let's get bck to living. Let's be smart about it. And those of us who are 70 or over, we'll take care of ourselves, but don't sacrifice the country."

In short, get the American economy back up and running as the COVID-19 epidemic continues to ravage mainly elderly Americans. The fastest factual response, from Sen. Lindsay Graham: "You can't have a functioning economy if you have hospitals overflowing."

It would be easy to dismiss Patrick as a rank, but for noises coming from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. President Donald Trump has begun to question whether the "cure" of Americans remaining apart is worse than the disease. "America will again and soon be open for business -- very soon," he promised. Adding Tuesday, "before Easter."

"If it were left up to the doctors, they may say, 'Let's keep it shut down. Let's shut down the entire world. You can't do that with a country , especially the No. 1 economy anywhere in the world, by far. You can't do that," the 45th president said.

The promises came as latest figures from New York show more than 25,000 people testing positive, with 44,000 nationwide and a death toll of 560 -- 110 in this Washington. What's happening in New York will soon reach other states. What threatened to be a "freight train," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, is beginning to look like a bullet train.
