History's verdict on Trump will be devastating

(CNN)In a crisis, all is revealed.
After a lifetime devoted to avoiding responsibility and accountability -- for his lies, his deceptions, his hype, and his cruelty -- President Donald Trump has met his match in the pandemic of 2020. His bluff and bluster are powerless as thousands of Americans die and the blame falls, in part, on his failure to heed the warnings and execute a robust national response. This occurred even though a pandemic playbook had been left behind by the Obama administration. Early in the crisis, Trump said "We have it totally under control. It's one person coming from China. It's going to be just fine." Weeks were wasted and now the price of this fiasco will likely be a loss of life far greater than 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina.

As someone who has studied Trump for years, I thought it was inevitable that he would eventually reach a moment of reckoning as president. I couldn't have imagined that it would come with the catastrophic consequences now facing the nation as Covid-19 overwhelms health care systems and brings the economy to a standstill. Trump's profound personal shortcomings -- deficiencies of his heart and mind -- helped bring us to this moment.

The first of Trump's weaknesses? His lack of emotional intelligence and empathy, which causes him to struggle to relate to human suffering. The developer who made tenants miserable so they would move out allowing him to build luxury condos, became the president who downplayed hurricane deaths in Puerto Rico, and now barely speaks of those stricken and killed by the coronavirus. Instead, he obsesses over TV ratings and the economy as if his image in the media and the ups and downs of Wall Street indices matter more than life itself.

The second of Trump's deficiencies is a habit of mind that discounts expertise and elevates convenient opinions supported by cherry-picked sources of misinformation. Businessman Trump exhibited this willful ignorance when, for example, he said the scientific connection between asbestos exposure and disease was a matter of a conspiracy carried out by mobsters. Candidate Trump discounted the expertise of experts leading the war on terror. And President Trump has claimed to have extensive knowledge on a vast array of topics from forest management to drones

his botched handling of this crisis.

Now, last place is all his. The bottom of the barrel.

as the worst president in American history. You could argue for Trump as well, of course, but he was not inarguably the absolute worst ever. A case could be made for Johnson or Buchanan.

Not anymore. Trump is now indisputably the worst president in American history.

he will be able to write his own history, purge records, intimidate witnesses, and depend on "his" judges to keep him out of harm's way.
The Fascist bastard may be beyond the reach of the people. We may not be able to undo Trump.

The same people who supported Trump four years ago are still supporting him today. If anything, the more their hero is attacked, the more they dig in their heels. They have too much emotional energy invested in Trump to admit that they may have made a big mistake. People don't like to admit mistakes, even to themselves. The Right are told that Trump is a victim, not a villain and they believe it.

By election day, the worst part of the crisis will be in the rear view mirror, the sick will have recovered, the dead will have been buried and the message will be scrambled in the short term memory of the American people. Trump will be bragging about what a great job he did saving millions of American lives. (as he is doing right now) The President will control the media and will also be bragging about the greatest economic comeback in history, and the fastest rate of job growth the nation has ever seen and the great victory over the invisible enemy. Biden will be being investigated for all types of imagined crimes. The churches will be painting Biden as a worse sexual deviant than Harvey. The Russians will be flooding America with plausible mistruths, half truths and damn lies; the Republicans will be supporting their efforts ate every turn. Bernie Sanders is liable to be running as an independent, insuring that the Democratic vote will be split enough to seal Trump's reelection. Our candidate is no Kennedy, no Roosevelt, or no Bill Clinton, he lacks the charisma that really inspires people and it will be harder than hell to sell him to the middle of the road people who voted for Trump that last election.

Trump's chances of being elected are no less than 50/50. It is harder to vote a Fascist president out of office than to vote one in
If you want to try to beat the odds, then work like hell to support Biden and every other Democrats running in every office from dog catcher to the Senate. Spend your money, your time and your energy. November may be the very last chance to recover America, but election sure isn't a shoe-in. You had better be scared as hell about the election; being in the cheering section of a liberal forum and living in denial ain't gonna do it.
