The Public Is Astonishingly United.
Pollsters have finally found an issue that transcends partisan divides, with the overwhelming majority of Americans siding against President Trump. (May 6, 2020)
*Apparently most Americans are not eager to think of themselves as warriorsor are simply wise soldiers, with strategy as their strength. A poll from The Washington Post and the University of Maryland released yesterday finds that eight in 10 Americans oppose reopening movie theaters and gyms; three-quarters dont support letting sit-down restaurants and nail salons reopen; and a third or less would allow barber shops, gun stores, and retail stores to operate. An NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll last week found similar numbers: Nine in 10 Americans dont think sporting events should have crowds without more testing; 85 percent would keep schools closed, and 80 percent would keep dine-in restaurants shut. There is no significant difference in views between residents of states that have begun loosening restrictions and those that have not.'>>>

(14,853 posts)Maybe what I'm OBSERVING in my area is to be expected?
If people take it seriously, they mostly stay indoors and I don't see them.
If people don't take it seriously, they nonchalantly go out and behave like there's no pandemic. They might even go out MORE just to flaunt it.

(7,505 posts)Reading that headline I figured the last word was going to be stupid, as in "astonishingly stupid." Glad to know they are not, but all those pictures of beaches and Kimmel segments sure have you wondering sometimes. Hope the media will latch on to these numbers.

(9,952 posts)open with a skeleton crew. I asked to be one furloughed. I was suppose to get a call on the 15th with them having reevaluated the situation on when and how they were opening back up and bringing us back to work. They didn't call me. I am good with that. They probably know I am not going in yet, but my guess is they are still not getting the customers in to require a rehire the staff back. I really had expected business to go up this last week with people getting out and the area I am in. But maybe people are not getting back out there, reading this article.

(130,860 posts)We tend to ignore that this is a big country, with MANY 'segments,' effected by many issues. For example, I'm in southern MD, between DC and Ocean City, MD. I personally have seen NO 'inappropriate' behavior, but a story about crowds in Ocean City has upset many.
trump and his followers like to take advantage of the reality of the big country, and play to their base, which is not enlarging.
