The deep malevolence that drives Trump's habits has now been laid naked - Alternet.org

September 11, 2020

It figures that Bob Woodward, the person who helped to take down Richard Nixon 45 years in the past, would follow up with a big book about Nixon’s pure inheritor to the presidency, Donald Trump. Simply as Nixon was undone by tape recordings he foolishly made to doc his personal corruption, so too Trump foolishly allowed himself to be recorded by Woodward. That’s what units Woodward’s guide “Rage” aside from all the opposite Trump books which have come earlier than: We are able to hear the quotes in Trump’s personal voice, so he can’t get away with calling it pretend information.

I feel most of us who’ve been observing this surreal presidency for the previous 4 years have puzzled whether or not Trump is extra ignorant than malevolent or vice versa. (Clearly, he’s each: It’s only a query of which is dominant.) It’s been particularly arduous to know throughout this pandemic disaster as a result of the president has made so many ill-informed feedback and odious selections, from the inane hydroxychloroquine marketing campaign to his decision to not implement a nationwide testing program as a result of the general public dying within the early days have been in blue states.

Listening to Trump blithely tell Woodward at first of February that he knew the pandemic was going to kill a complete lot extra folks than the flu and that it was an airborne illness proves that he’s malevolent at the beginning. You may hear it in his voice — so blandly indifferent and dispassionate as he talks about what he describes as “lethal stuff.” We all know he’d been warned concerning the probability of the virus coming to America by this level. Woodward even studies that nationwide safety adviser Robert O’Brien had advised Trump in January that the virus could be the “greatest nationwide safety risk you face in your presidency.”

It’s clear that Trump merely didn’t care about that. And he by no means modified. CNN reports this anecdote from the guide that backs up that impression:

ON MARCH 19, BECAUSE THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC WAS EXPLODING, WOODWARD REQUESTED TRUMP IF HE EVER SAT DOWN ALONE WITH DR. ANTHONY FAUCI, DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONWIDE INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES, TO BE TAUGHT EXTRA CONCERNING THE VIRUS.”SURE, I SUPPOSE, HOWEVER ACTUALLY THERE’S NOT A VARIETY OF TIME FOR THAT, BOB,” TRUMP MENTIONED TO WOODWARD. “THIS CAN BE A BUSY WHITE HOME. WE’VE ACQUIRED A VARIETY OF ISSUES OCCURRING. AFTER WHICH THIS GOT HERE UP.”

That is discussed in the article. In the clip where he casually and coolly discussed the lethality with Woodward, I was struck by his lack of histrionics and hyperbole. And I realized that he's not just crazy as a loon, he's also crazy like a fox. I've been underestimating him by not realizing that before now.
