Why do Republicans think this stupid argument absolves Trump of anything?

Republicans are still trying to excuse Donald Trump’s deadly mismanagement of the coronavirus pandemic. As such, they’ve fixated on the “lab leak” theory of the virus—that the Chinese either deliberately or accidentally released the virus from a lab in Wuhan.

Remember, nothing is ever Trump’s fault. It was the media’s fault. It was the Democrats’ fault. And now, it’s China’s fault. If only China hadn’t leaked that virus, people wouldn’t have turned against Trump. Or, so Lindsey Graham and MAGA nation believes.

Except, distressingly enough, the pandemic didn’t much change any minds about Trump, and, even if the lab leak (conspiracy?) theory is true, it would paint Trump in even a worse light:

It’s one thing to be unprepared for an unforeseen natural disaster. It’s another to be attacked by a foreign adversary and fail to protect our nation. In other words, if Graham and Trump are right, then Trump didn’t keep us safe.

there is evidence that it was in Europe in other places before it was noticed in Wuhan.

New viruses will continue to emerge from random places, forever. What matters is our willingness to respond.

Is there such a thing as De-evolution? I think most of these trumpers' thumbs have disappeared. Next, they'll grow larger cranial ridges and start walking all stooped over and shit.

Yes, and it is happening in current time. I watched my sister and middle brother go from sane, calm, rational people to insane spittal producing tRump zealots in 5+ years. I don't fully understand it, and to be honest, I hope never do!

and believing outright lies.

It's been an uphill battle, but a growing majority of the electorate is coming to the point where the GOP, if it can't shake Trump, loses its position as the "other" major party.

is one of a man who downplayed the seriousness of the virus as they watched their relatives die. The source of the virus is not the point. It was all so obvious how it had to do with the election, that everyone who could see clearly rejected him and formed a coalition to elect Biden.
