Republicans are the 21st Century Know-Nothing Party

In the 1850s, an anti-Catholic, anti-Irish, xenophobic movement burst on the political scene in the United States. At first a secret society, the Native American Party required their initiates to present proof of a Protestant pedigree, support mandatory Bible-reading in public schools and a 21-year naturalization period for immigrants, use hand signals and passwords, and promise to respond to questions from outsiders by saying, "I know nothing."

The mantra stuck.

Before it flamed out, the "Know Nothing Party" sent hundreds of its members to the U.S. Congress and state legislatures.

I would say that it's hard to believe that the American people are too stupid to see and recognize this stuff, but given the GOP's lack of funding for public education that, you know, teaches anything... I guess it's not so hard to believe.

I saw a celebrity on "Finding Your Roots with Dr. Louis Gates" and the celeb was Irish... his ancestors found it difficult to get jobs upon arriving in the U.S. because they were Catholic and The Know-Nothing Party was alive and well. I've lived over half a century and never knew about the Know-Nothing party. I never knew about the Tulsa Race Massacre until last year.

While I am well-aware that there has been plenty of systemic racism in this country's history, I have to admit that there is a lot of history that I was NOT taught as I was growing up.

Sure, there are some fascist pricks out there. Ignorance only adds to the problem.
