Boosters: WH Likely To Approve Covid Boosters At 6 Months, WSJ; What You Need To Know, J&J, NPR
- WSJ, Aug. 26, 2021. 'Biden Administration Likely to Approve Covid-19 Boosters at 6 Months.' Pfizer, BioNTech have requested clearance for Covid-19 vaccine boosters that an official said could be administered 6 months after previous dose. - Ed.
The Biden administration announced that Americans who have been fully vaccinated with a 2-dose regimen against Covid-19 should receive a booster, citing the threat from the highly contagious Delta variant. WSJ breaks down what you need to know. Federal regulators are likely to approve a Covid-19 booster shot for vaccinated adults starting at least 6 months after the previous dose rather than the 8-month gap they previously announced, a person familiar with the plans said, as the Biden administration steps up preparations for delivering boosters to the public.
Data from vaccine manufacturers and other countries under review by the FDA is based on boosters being given at 6 months, the person said. The person said approval for boosters for all 3 Covid-19 shots being administered in the U.S.those manufactured by Pfizer Inc. and partner BioNTech SE, Moderna Inc. and Johnson & Johnson is expected in mid-September.
The Biden administration and companies have said that there should be enough supply for boosters that they plan to begin distributing more widely on Sept. 20. The U.S. has purchased a combined 1 billion doses from Pfizer and Moderna. A WH spokesman declined to comment. An FDA spokeswoman declined to comment on interactions with vaccine manufacturers.
Pfizer and BioNTech said Wed. that they had asked U.S. health regulators to authorize boosters of their Covid-19 vaccine and submitted additional data showing a 3rd dose improves protection against the virus. The FDA granted full approval to the vaccine on Monday. Biden administration officials have said they hope full approval will encourage more people to get vaccinated, pushing up inoculation rates that recently climbed past 60% of the eligible U.S. population...

Health officials are preparing to roll out COVID-19 booster shots in the U.S. this Sept. According to a plan announced Aug. 18, all U.S. adults who received a 2-dose vaccine would be eligible for an additional jab of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine 8 months from when they got their 2nd one. "These booster shots are free," President Biden said in remarks Wed. afternoon encouraging people in the U.S. to get the shots when it's their turn. "It will be easy. Just show your vaccination card, get a booster. ... It will make you safer and for longer. And it will help us end the pandemic faster."
The timing of the move comes as something of a surprise. It was just a few days earlier that the FDA and CDC recommended a 3rd shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine for a more limited population- people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. The agencies made no mention then of imminently expanding this recommendation to the wider population. .. "We are concerned that the current strong protection against severe infection, hospitalization and death could decrease in the months ahead, especially among those who are at higher risk or who were vaccinated earlier," Walensky said. Booster shots, she said, would "maximize vaccine induced protection."
- What if I got the J&J vaccine? J&J issued a press release on Aug. 25 with preliminary results of a small study suggesting a second shot of the J&J vaccine could rapidly increase antibody levels in recipients. For now, though, booster shots are being advised for the mRNA vaccines only. A separate booster recommendation for individuals who received a Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine is expected soon, health officials say. The J&J vaccine was authorized for use in the U.S. a little later than the others- in March- and firm data on the safety and efficacy of an additional dose aren't yet available..
- How will this roll out? Who will get boosters first? Assuming the FDA and CDC give their blessing, all adults who got one of the mRNA vaccines will be eligible for boosters 8 months after their 2nd shot, starting Sept. 20. (As we mentioned above, the timeline and guidance from health officials on J&J boosters has yet to be determined, and may be different). Murthy notes that this plan automatically gives priority to high-risk groups...

(41,102 posts)I did for the first 2 shots, after the rush slowed down.
I just went in, told them I got scripts there and couldn't get the shot earlier. So they gave me both shots, 4 weeks apart- late May and June, no appointment. Nice people.
If I were you I'd try it in person if convenient. Or maybe phone them first.
Best of luck, give it a try.
