Why We Need to Upgrade Our Face Masks--and Where to Get Them
A wealth of evidence has shown that wearing a face mask helps prevent people from spreading the virus that causes COVID, SARS-CoV-2, to others and from becoming sick themselves. But there has been less guidance from public health officials on what kind of masks provide the best protection.
Early on in the pandemic, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization told the public not to wear N95 respirators, a type of mask that is made from high-tech synthetic fibers and provides a high level of protection against virus-laden airborne particles called aerosols. That was because there was then a shortage of such masksand health care workers desperately needed them. At the same time, both agencies said there was little risk of aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2. They recommended cloth masks or other homemade face coverings that can stop some relatively large virus-carrying droplets even as it became clear that SARS-CoV-2 commonly spreads through aerosolsand as the supply of better-quality masks increased.
There is now a cornucopia of high-filtration respirator-style masks on the market, including N95s, Chinese-made KN95s and South Koreanmade KF94s. They have been widely available and relatively affordable for months and provide better protection than cloth or surgical masks. Yet it was not until September 10 that the CDC finally updated its guidance to say the general public could wear N95s and other medical-grade masks now that they are in sufficient supply.

(32,758 posts)Just an FYI...the kn95 vs the n95-
The cdc rates the n95 as most effective. The kn95 is rated by Chinas version of the cdc. Both are really good

(205,239 posts)It's family run, and that's what he ordered. And in the beginning I passed them on to family and friends. Since then, he's ordered some others, has tried to talk me into "pretty" masks, but I've stuck with the KN95s.

(205,239 posts)With snacks, drinks and tobacco products. I'm actually old enough that I can remember when you could get your car serviced or repaired at the same places you bought gas - no food products available. My parents got their cars serviced at a nearby Mobil station and knew the owner and the mechanics. These days, I take my car to the dealership where I bought it. And that same Mobil station is practically a grocery store...

Surgical masks are cheap for now. Cloth masks range in price but even if they are a little pricey the are reusable.

(41,131 posts)to use them as a first layer with a cloth mask on top for closer fit to eliminate gaps. I alternate between N95's and double masks, depending on the circumstances.
In case you forget one or a strap breaks, carry one or two extra respirators and masks, in a tote, purse or in the car.

(471 posts)I had no idea how good until we went to an outdoor event and others in my party were complaining about the smell of cigar smoke some 30 away (they had those thin paper hospital masks on). I couldnt smell it with my KN95 on, but pulling it down I could. Impressed me!

(589 posts)filtered masks exclusively since this whole thing started. Either N95 masks with a cloth cover or ATSM Level 3 surgical masks with a cloth cover...and in prolonged indoor scenarios I make the cloth cover a Halomask with their filter insert.
Until I got the vax I was wearing goggles in indoor settings too...either regular ones with all the holes covered or swimming goggles.
And I carry a little spray bottle of rubbing alcohol with me everywhere.
All of this has the added bonus of people avoiding me because I look kind of demented and somewhat dangerous (both of which are actually more or less true, frankly).
I've been using a nasal spray called Taffix before I go into any potential hot zones. I have a weekly delivery run that I do for a small organic farm in a large city, and it takes me to places where people are less than 100% careful (like a university campus).

(21,433 posts)the dominant variant in the US, KN95 and N95 masks were selling at low prices. Everyone thought the pandemic was over so you could get a box of 50 N95s for $35. Now the price is up to $60 or $70 for a box of 50 and they are harder to find now that people are buying them more. There are a lot of fakes, too. If ordering online, you have to sift through several options and read the descriptions carefully. They should have 5 layers, headbands instead of ear loops, and be NIOSH approved particulate filters.
Cloth masks work well if they are paired with a surgical mask. The surgical mask goes on first, with the nose piece adjusted to fit snugly. Then a cloth mask with at least 2 layers of cotton, with adjustable loops and nose piece so that they fit snugly with no gaps at the cheeks or nose. That gives you 5 layers, 2 cloth and 3 layers of nonwoven material in the surgical mask. Surgical masks are cheap and cloth ones are washable.
With a good fit, you should be able to see the mask suck inward when you inhale and outward when you exhale. You should also be able to put on glasses with no fogging.

I wear cloth masks when I'm not working. Maybe I'll go back to surgical masks.

(989 posts)They are versatile, as they can be worn with any type of filter inserted into the pocket or even over a N95, KN95, or KF94 mask in a double-mask setup.
If masks tend to slip off your ears a they do mine, I highly recommend buying lanyards or mask holders to keep them in place.
