Fiona Hill says Trump's presidency was a 'mistake,' warning populist politicians like him 'short-circuit our democracy'

Fiona Hill, former senior director for Europe and Russia on the National Security Council, testifies to a House Intelligence Committee hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into US President Donald Trump on November 21, 2019. Erin Scott/Reuters

Hill, who served as Trump's top Russia advisor on the National Security Council, said the warning she's sought to make in her forthcoming book is that populist politicians like Trump "rarely do anything to fix the situation for everybody ... and the risk of populist politics is that it short-circuits our democracy, because it's one leader saying: 'I'm the only person who matters in this system.'" The book, "There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century," is set to be released on Tuesday.

Along these lines, Stephanopoulos asked if it was a mistake to work for Trump — a twice-impeached president who left the White House in disgrace following what Hill has described as a "self-coup" at the US Capitol on January 6.

"I saw myself as serving the country," Hill said of her time in the Trump administration, adding, "I think it was a mistake to have President Trump as the president, unfortunately."........................................

In 2016, in horror, we found out how many stupid, manipulated Americans we live side by side with. Then a pandemic. We’re in the 7th circle of hell.

She is part of the problem because it does little good to find out the truth after the damage has been allowed to happen. Notice that I said "allowed to happen". We have got to remove the profit incentive out of government service, which is already well paid. The honorable thing would have been to blow the whistle. And to boycott the book.

She worked hard to do her job despite the chaos Trump was creating. She worked hard to protect our democracy. She kept copious records and testified against Trump at congressional hearings. She seems like exactly the type of person we need working in government, someone who believes in democracy rather than some twisted personal agenda or authoritarian ideas.

I think it is our civic duty to find out what the orange F wad did while in office.

However, I agree, I am angry too that these people stood by and did nothing when they could have spoken out.

Was he trying to pull something over on Trump?

Or just toying with Trump, which we know Putin likes to do....
torments world leaders when he meets with them.

Putin knows a fool when he sees one, he knows a predator when he sees one, he knows a weak man he can exploit when he sees one.

Putin would have been derelict not to set honey traps for Trump.

Trump's views and behavior have always been very unpopular.

Calling Fascism "populism" is an attempt to gloss over how evil it is, and falsely implies that it's somehow "popular".
