Opinion: I'm no Democrat -- but I'm voting exclusively for Democrats to save our democracy
If we want to save our democratic form of government, we need to make sure that as many Democrats are elected in 2022 as possible

Im a single-issue voter. My issue is the fate of democracy in the United States. Simply put, I have no faith that we will remain a democracy if Republicans win power. Thus, although Im not a Democrat, I will continue to vote exclusively for Democrats as I have done in every election since 2016 until the GOP ceases to pose an existential threat to our freedom.
If you want to know why Im so alarmed about the current state of my former party, look at the dueling documents released last week by the Senate Judiciary Committee about President Donald Trumps attempt to pressure the Justice Department into helping to overturn the 2020 election.
Committee Democrats issued a lengthy report documenting all of the pressure Trump applied to acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen to substantiate bogus claims of election fraud. Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Clark was nauseatingly eager to cooperate by sending a letter to Georgias governor and legislative leaders urging them to convene a special session to appoint pro-Trump electors in a state that Trump lost. When Rosen wouldnt cooperate, Trump threatened to replace him with Clark.....
To prevent a successful coup in 2024, it is imperative to elect Democrats at every level of government in 2021 and 2022 to state legislatures and governorships, as well as the House and Senate. Democrats should break a Senate filibuster to pass voting rights legislation that would help ensure free elections. But even if that doesnt happen and Republicans rig the rules, small-D democrats can still prevail by turning out en masse to vote for Big-D Democrats.
It doesnt matter if you think the Build Back Better bill is too small or too big. What matters now is preserving our endangered democracy. We must not get so distracted by relatively minor policy quibbles that we lose sight of the true stakes in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

(51,584 posts)I have the feeling Biden may be the last POTUS that our democracy will legally elect. I am almost relieved that I won't live a long life and I am grateful I chose not to have kids a looooong time ago. I certainly don't want to live in a country that is pro-tRump after everything we have experienced.

(3,064 posts)But if a Democrat doesn't doesn't keep the White House and this making it increasingly harder for ALL the " not really Americans" to vote doesn't start turning around I may never come back, to live anyway.
I voted overseas in 2018 and 2020. As a Texan I desperately wanted Beto to beat Count Chocula. And I definitely wanted to vote for Biden over the Odious One.
And I'll definitely be casting my overseas ballot in 2022 and 2024.
If the voting's fair and all Texans are allowed equal access to the ballots Texas will go blue in 2024. But those are some big ifs, unfortunately.
Texas could pull off a big upset like Georgia did in 2020. But they can't allow it. Texas had 38 EC votes in 2020 and with the two extra EC votes they'll have by gaining two Congressional seats they'll have 40 in 2024.
Losing Texas would mean their demise as a National party. They'll steal it by any means possible.

(6,017 posts)We're all saying "I'm voting straight down the ticket all Democratic Party no matter what".
Because we have to do so. We know we do. So do they.
For my entire adult life (I'm an older Gen-X) the Democratic Party has known this. It's what allows them to move further and further right. "Centrist" now is all too often practically Republican of 35-40 yrs ago in many ways. Ostensibly to try to capture those Republican voters who are okay with the racism, sexism, elitism, ableism, etc of the GOP but lose their senses for a moment, just long enough to vote for Dem President. I have a feeling it's also much more lucrative for the Dem Party and its member politicians, since few corporate donors are going to be hanging out further to the left. And it's very, very stable. There's little risk to them or their political futures. We'll always need them.
