Teaching 'opposing views' of the Holocaust is the latest effort to rewrite history
A Texas school district has written a new chapter in the ugly history of Holocaust denial.
An administrator at Caroll Independent School District in South Lake told teachers to include books that present "opposing views" of the Holocaust. "Make sure that if you have a book on the Holocaust, that you have one that has opposing, that has other perspectives," executive director of curriculum and instruction Gina Peddy told a group of disbelieving educators.
The only other "perspective" on the Holocaust is denial. The demand to include it as a legitimate point of view is part of a larger effort to rewrite history to please those who fear the growing diversity of the United States.
Holocaust denial is nothing new. It began as soon as the camps were liberated. General Dwight Eisenhower, supreme commander of Allied Forces in Europe, anticipated such denial might occur..

Texas schools are being told to teach opposing views of the Holocaust. Why?

(53,944 posts)Many have seen this coming for awhile. While outright denialism is frowned upon and repudiated, something more insidious lurks about and that is Holocaust minimalization. It has been more and more used in the past few decades by supposedly enlightened people. I am not taking about updating as more information becomes available, I am talking about those who manipulate information to rewrite the history, while not denying it. There is a strong inclination among some to dissociate the Jews from the Holocaust, or make them "background characters" in the event.

(3,974 posts)One of the ways is to deny the number 6,000,000.
I know someone who was born in Poland shortly after WWII ended. He lives in my retirement community in Florida.
He listens to right-wing radio station that is a Polish equivalent of Fox news.
They tell him it wasn't 6 million. They say it was only a few thousand Jews, homosexuals, and gypsies.
He believes them and spouts this nonsense. He is unshakable in his beliefs.
Ironically, he's married to a Jewish woman, and all this rightfully infuriates her. (Frankly, it was a green-card marriage so he could stay in this country.)
He's also an anti-vaxxer. Why? Polish right-wing radio, of course.

It happened.
People can shove their denial and minimalization of the Holocaust down their throats and choke on them.

(53,944 posts)However, it is happening in a very real way and it is a threat. The interesting thing is most, though not all, revisionism and minimalization, revolve around the Jews. It is just another form of anti-Semitism, passed off as intellectualism. Sadly, it is not the only kind of "intellectual" anti-Semitism which exists and is used against the Jewish people. Holocaust minimalization also has another nasty side, and that is the misuse of it in false or exaggerated metaphors, examples, and the like; usually for political purposes; and, again, often focusing on Jews.

(397 posts)There is no question the Holocaust took place. It was documented and recorded. Those records, along with some of the camps still exist. Allied forces tried and convicted some of the instigators at Nuremberg. Many of those on trial confessed. It is an event recognized by both allied and German authorities.
The 'other side' of teaching about the Holocaust is not that it didnt happen. The 'other side' is that it was justified. Teachers are being asked to rationalize and defend naziism
