Gift Article: Why 'MAGA' is so appealing to older Republicans, WAPO

https://wapo.st/3n5O5oD

In the 2020 election, older Americans were more likely to support Donald Trump than Joe Biden — but not by as wide a margin as you might think. Pew Research Center’s validated assessment of turnout in that election indicates that Trump won people ages 65 and older by about four points. That’s a slight advantage, at best.

One reason we associate Republican politics with older Americans is simply that younger Americans are so much more Democratic. In 2020, voters under the age of 30 preferred Biden by 24 points. Between the parties themselves, there’s a difference: A higher density of the GOP is older than is the case with Democrats. About a third of the Republican Party is 65 or older.

Why this divide by age? In part because of demographics. Older Americans are less likely to be Black, Hispanic or Asian than younger Americans, all groups that vote more heavily Democratic. In fact, the gap between older and younger voters in presidential voting overlaps with the election of Barack Obama in 2008, a moment in which the confluence of demography and politics was acutely obvious.

In the 2016 election, Trump leveraged concerns among older Republicans about the changing demography of the United States to his benefit. His slogan — make America great again — was not specifically about race, but it incorporated a sense that America had declined as it also was less disproportionately focused on the needs of White Americans.

I couldn't have less in common with these regressive, fearful, close-minded people!

Turning 68 later this month!

I mean..I'm imperfect, still evolving, sometimes have to face my discomfort at so much being new..a different world than I grew up in. But I work on it and I acknowledge it as fear-based.

I find generally if you see people as individuals, rather than stereotyping them - interact with them if you can - the fear dissipates and you find meaningful connection!! It's a joy!

Turning 63 later this month. I just cannot wrap my head around why anyone would waste their one and only life on this planet being angry and afraid of damn near everything.

but would never admit that's racism.

Several years ago, after Obama had been elected, I listened in on a whine session about political correctness by a group of all white men, college educated homeowners, who were angry that they had to watch what they said in a corporate environment. They had other gripes, too, mostly quotas for hiring & how unfair that was to white men.

I heard the same thing very recently at a company I left. Just so happened all the upper management was older white men, I was one of them. I'm taking them to court for another reason, being laid off while on sick leave, but I will bring this up in disposition and I will testify in court if required. We will see.

Republicans hate the same people they do: people who need or want abortions and birth control, LGBTQ people and their pronouns, people of color and especially Mexicans, and affirmative action and those it is meant to provide equal opportunity to.

They're living on social security. And they REPEATEDLY vote for Republicans who promise to cut, gut, privatize and take it away from them...AND ME. Do they give a fuck?

NO. And there's something wrong with ME (a minority) if I take that personally. Nothing wrong with THEM. Just ME.

And they believe NOBODY should have to pay any taxes. ESPECIALLY THE PEOPLE WITH ALL THE MONEY!

Those Republican politicians hate the same people they do and also believe no one should have to pay taxes (especially the people with all the money), so they keep voting for them. NO MATTER WHAT. If Social Security and Medicare go away or get cut, they'll just blame Democrats who spend all their time TRYING TO SAVE IT!

NO SIGN OF INTELLIGENT LIFE or common damn sense ANYWHERE in any of it.

But yea. I'M the problem. Pronouns are the problem. Affirmative action is the problem. Mexicans are the problem. Abortion and birth control and those who need these things are the problem.

NOT THEM. JUST THOSE OTHER PEOPLE.

ALWAYS those "other" people.

The older white voters (with many exceptions) tend to become radicalized.

"I remember the days when you'd walk down the street, or into a store, and almost everyone was white!" is what eventually they get to, once they get a few drinks in them.

right wing talk radio, followed up by Fox News. That created an echo chamber that fed all their fears, and played to all their needs. It built up Reagan, who knew exactly what they wanted to hear, and tore down the Jimmy Carter, the Clintons, and, finally, Obama. They believed the lies because they had grown up with a deep fear of communism and socialism - and the myth that people were poor because they were lazy, and people on welfare were just spending their tax dollars on TVs and fancy cars. I'm an older American now, but I watched my parents, the Depression and WWII Generation, get sucked in and completely brainwashed by the right wing media. But there are Baby Boomers, and people in every generation, who fall for the right wing lies. I'm glad to hear that a younger people are more liberal, but I hope 1) they vote, and 2) they don't get disillusioned and sucked into one of the many right wing tar pits of despair.

demographic. I think people feel more vulnerable as they get older, and may worry about finances, health, and money. Republicans are telling them that liberals are doing bad things to the country that will harm them and they vote accordingly. It’s interesting that Pew Research reported that 37% of the 65+ group use Fox as their main news source versus only 21% of all adults.
