Perhaps the most anticipated float of the 2012 Rose Parade is an unofficial entrant: a giant "Occupy Octopus" made out of plastic bags. Occupy The Rose Parade protesters plan to march the 70-by-40-feet "float," along with a giant blown-up version of the United State Constitution, at the end of the Rose Parade. Occupy's "People's Parade" will be marching against corporate personhood and the foreclosure crisis, according to the organizers' site, as well as protesting the influence of corporate money in politics.
Occupy The Rose Parade stepped off at 9:30 a.m., and while television broadcasters didn't stick around for their march, the whole thing was streamed live on UStream. Protesters were led by 30 police cars, and at every block of the parade route, about one dozen cops were standing on the corner. While some parade viewers started leaving the bleachers for their cars, most of the stands remained full throughout the People's Parade. Viewers supplied the marchers with a healthy mix of both cheers and jeers.
Raul Plata, a parade-goer from Washington, D.C., told the Huffington Post that he was impressed with the Occupy the Rose Parade marchers. "To me, it was a surprise that they were so clever to take advantage of a free opportunity to show off their case, which is change in the world," said Plata. "I think the very long Constitution was a very unique and impressive. Maybe they'll keep on taking advantage of world-wide promoted events."

(8,864 posts)A couple of things were very noticeable:
1) The Occupy Movement was extremely large. It had to be
at least 1/4 mile long, possibly longer.
2) The LA County Sheriff's department should be ashamed of themselves.
There were loads of Sheriffs dressed in military outfits.
Don't they know that they're part of the 99%, or are they idiots?
I got into it with several people shouting that they are the 1%.
I asked one lady if she was a 1%'er, and she said she was. I told her
I doubt it because she'd be sitting in the luxury boxes instead of standing
with the rest of us 99%'ers.
A second person was wearing a Uof Wisconsin shirt, and yelling that we
99%'ers should get a job or at least go to school.
I said you're wearing a shirt to a public university, and complaining that
the 99%'ers should go to school, yet you're not willing to pony up more
money to allow that to happen? You act as if everyone can afford to go
to a university. You're a hypocrite.

(16,035 posts)Thanks for your post and comments. Sorry about the moron visitor from our state. That said, he was probably a Walker supporter. They are still out there, for whatever reason I cannot understand.

(1 post)Occupy the Rose Parade?
Occupy never occupied anything.
They camped out at L.A. City Hall and then claimed to occupy Los Angeles.
Come on.
They did not occupy the Rose Parade either.
To occupy something means to take it over.
They never took over the Rose Parade, Los Angeles or anything.
Occupy is a joke and they are not changing anything.
They are just causing trouble and no one wants them around.
The parade was wonderful as usual.
The only ones who occupied it were the welcomed participants.
That does not include Occupy.

(16,035 posts)The 1% ARE doing lots of things to show they "care". If you aren't 1%, then you are a 99%er that does not get how we change things, and relying on politicians (of any stripe) ain't gonna do it. We are working for you too, even though you actively fight against your own best interests...are have you been paid to post this stuff?

(8,864 posts)Google-ing his name, you'll find out that he's a libertarian.
You know the type that wants to get rid of all government
until it applies to them.
They're very hard to debate because they'll take a small
piece of truth and paint everything with it, sounding like
they know what they're talking about.
Not worth the trouble.

(4,012 posts)I got up at 3am & arrived at Singer Park around 4:45am. It was still dark & most hadn't arrived. I met a few great people while warming up with some coffee. I was a little worried about the numbers, but people just kept coming & coming. We easily had a few thousand people by the time we hit the streets.
Here are a few pics (in order):
We are doing last-minute work on Occupy the Octopus. You can see that its early by the darkness of the photo.
Here a picture of the Octopus while they are practicing. One of the arms of the Octopus uses the Foreclosure Hammer to pound on the House.
There were a lot of cool signs.
Here is another.
Cindy Sheehan joined us. She showed up to Smith Park early
shes so nice. I even got a hug!
The start of the march. I wish I had a better angle, but you can see it was more than 400 people (apparently the Pasadena Police estimate).
Oh yeah, I met up with pinboy3niner at the rally after the march. It was good to see another DUer representing. Thanks for the meal
Ill see you around soon.
Ill try to post more about this, but its bedtime. I must say it was a smashing success. Im so proud of everyone who organized & came out.
Solidarity.
