In Tucson, Looking Forward a Year After Giffords Shooting

FIRST PERSON | TUCSON, Ariz. -- On Jan. 8, 2011, I woke up to the news of the Tucson shooting just minutes after it unfolded a few miles from my home. The sirens woke me first. A moment later, I received a phone call to turn on my TV.
I was riveted. I was horrified. I was supposed to be there.
I overslept that morning. My plan the night before was simple: I would be standing outside a Safeway grocery store far too early the next morning, tape recorder in hand, getting quotes from Rep. Gabrielle Giffords for a story. The whole thing was so low-key that I planned to bring my son along to meet Gabby and "watch Mommy work" before ducking into Safeway to grab dinner for that night and heading home. I had been looking forward to it.
I would spend the next several weeks in tearful disbelief and every day since in a quiet resolve to never forget what happened to my civil-minded neighbors who didn't oversleep.
